AIBU?

A bit worried about DDs weight

DD is 19 months old, we weighed her last week at my MIL and she weighs 2 stone. This takes her I think onto the 91st centile.
She has always (on the rare occassions I had her weighed) been around the 50th centile and was on about 45 on her 1 year HV check.
She is very tall, taller than her boy cousin who is only 23 hours younger than her. She eats a varied and healthy diet, she has a few treats (eg a bourbon biscuit on wednesday afternoons when we go to the park) but on the whole eats lots of pulses, grains, pasta, fish, veggies and fruit. She also breastfeeds quite a lot
In the last few weeks I have really noticed how much bigger (not fatter, just bigger all over) she is than other children her age, we saw a lady who was at our original birth group yesterday and Kitty looks so much bigger and older than her son that I am starting to feel a bit worried. We were talking to an old lady in the park yesterday and she asked how old K is - when I said 19 months she was really surprised and said she thought she was a lot older than that.

We have weight issues in our families and I am very conscious to try and give her the best possible start with her diet, trying to tread a path between letting her eat anything and being too restrictive.

I haven't seen the HV since January and am thinking about going to the next clinic so that I can get her properly weighed and ask them about it. Do you think I will be wasting their time ?

I know this isn't strictly an AIBU topic but as there is already a HV topic I thought I would get prompt thoughts here !

If she is tall, she is probably in proportion. Some children are just big for their age.
Can you find out what centime she is on for height?

If she is very tall too, and her height is on a very high centile then I don't think her weight being high is that muich of an issue. It means she is in proportion. If she was very short and that weight then it would be more worrying.

Well, if I do go I was going to ask them to measure her as well then look at it as an overall picture.
It's the speed with which she seems to have jumped approx 45 centiles that I am finding worrying. Yet she still fits into her 9-12 month sleepsuits.

How tall are you and your DH? What percentile was she born on? How tall is she? If you know you can check her against the red book weight charts. From 50 to 91 is a big leap but could be a growth spurt.

I wrote an almost identical thread about this in development about a month ago and got lots of helpful suggestions, I'll dig it out for you if you'd like?

In the end I went to the HV. DD is 21 months, 16kg and 92 cm tall which puts her on the 107th centile, but she was born on the 98th centile (9lb15) so she has followed a normal path. HV said she was fine as she is in proportion (weight to height), though she is by no means a delicate flower, and suggested some healthy snacks as a precaution.

I also found out that weetabix are 117 calories EACH Shock. DD was eating up to 4 of them at a sitting though she's gone back to 2 now.

She is in size 5 shoes already. Maybe I should just let it go, I have never worried about her weight and it's not as if I am cramming her full of chocolate.
Or maybe MILs scales are weighing overheavy... we would all be very pleased about that !

I would take her to see your health visitor. Jumping 45 centiles in a few months is quite alot and if she still fits in 9 - 12 month sleep suits she cannot be that tall for her age.

I am 5'6", DH is 6'3". DH's family are all very tall - MIL is about 5'11" and SIL is about the same if not taller, FIL/BIL are both over 6'

I think I will definitely go to the clinic on Tuesday then, if nothing else it will put my mind at rest

I think StrandedBear is right.
16kg is 35lb which is half a stone heavier than your DD. I don't think your DD can be on the 91st percentile as it's too close to my DD iyswim?

I have absolutely no problem with her being tall and big - I just don't want her to be fat like her Mum :(

I dont think size 5 is that big for first schools. My oldest didn't walk until 18 months and was a size 5 1/2. He is now 15 and a size 7 adult and weights 7 stone.

If you think about it as adults we are all different shapes, sizes and weights so it makes sense that not every child is going to be the same weight as they are going to have their own unique build. Yes there is lots of obesity awarness now but if you know that your DD is getting a healthy balanced diet and plenty of time to run about in fresh air then try not to worry.

Don't worry, DD1 weighed the same at 19 months and now she's 6. She's in the middle of the healthy weight zone and looks slim and fit. She is quite tall for her age but being one of the younger ones in the year there are quite a few taller than her in her class.

DD2 weighs the same as DD1 did at her age but is much taller. Been in 3-4 clothes since she turned two, and now some 4-5 stuff doesn't look too massive. She's 2.5 and looks at least a year older, height wise. She only has fluffy baby hair though so people usually work out she's just tall.

We aren't short but not massive either. I'm 5'7" and DH is 5'11". No-one else in a family is especially tall.

I think in our family, at least on my side we seem to grow fast but stop/slow down early. I remember being very much the tallest in the class until 11/12 when loads of classmates shot up past me.

try measure her yourself then you may feel better but dc do often jump heights and grow fast for a while

Ds 1 ollwed 50 % line
Ds2 makes up his own rules
dd folowed 25th line
ds3 follows below the 2% line

.I have dc at either end of extremes in height

Offers details but think my ds may be tad old for your dd ds 1 is 6foot at 17 , ds2 is 14 and 6,2 and not stoping yet

according to my chart 2 stone (28 lbs ) at 19months is just over the 91st centile , I think you would then be looking at a height of around 86cm +/- 2cm if she is between 84 and 88+cm you are fine is she is less than 80cm I would go and see HV, also different scales weigh differently even when set to zero I am 4lbs lighter on my mothers scales

measure her lying down not standing against door as children uopto 2 are always measured for length not height in practice

i think if on 91st centile for weight you would look for height being between 75th and 98th but if not it does not necessarily mean a problem

clothes are not really a guide my 21 month old DD is about 23lb , 81cm and size 4 feet, which makes her just below 25th for height and kjust above for weight.she wears mothercare 9-12 month sleepsuits which are a bit long in leg but body getting short but dare not move up to next size as legs about 10cm too long and she will trip over her feet which would be like flippers. she can hardly get into some 12-18 month stuff and all 18-24 month stuff drowns her , her legs are a bit short so only wears 6-9 or 9-12 trousers, one outfit bought her last christmas still fits fine

Very true about clothes - DD is in age 2-3 for most but age 3-4 for Zara and Petit Bateau, yet she still fits in 12-18 months for White Company and Polarn O Pyret. And she is the tallest child of her age I have ever seen.

Ds is 18 months and weighs 2 stone (roughly - I popped him on the scales fully clothed last time we went to see the nurse!)

He has always ranged between 75th and 91st centile for weight and is actually off the centile chart for height. Everyone always assumes he is older than he is, which could be embarrassing at times as he was such a late walker (17 mos!)

I am not worried at all about his weight, he certainly doesn't look fat and both DH and I are tall (ish) and thin...
