AIBU?

to giggle at the lengths my friends will go to to save money

our friends are getting married. The man is stupidly cheap (he once asked me to go sparingly with his bicarbonate of soda which Id borrowed, because its 80p in the shops!)

Anyway, they have managed to avoid spending any money on the wedding. Its being paid for by his Dad who is very wealthy, guests are forking out to go on holiday to the venue which is all inclusive so the wedding breakfast is part of the guests deal. Theres no reception, just staying in the all inclusive restaurant. No bridesmaids, and hes wearing a suit he already has. But our friends have to pay for the cake. They want a cupcake for each person as the wedding cake. We sourced them for £40. Thats too much so shes making them.

BUT. They are making the cakes 3 days before they go and they wont keep plus they will be in transit. They dont care what they look like (have actually said this) and are having the cakes inside white boxes. So the cake will be a pile of boxes.

I giggled at this because its so ridiculously tight. Am I a cow. Why not just buy a cake if thats the only thing you have to pay for?! The cake will be a pile of boxes with off cake inside?!

If it makes them happy...

Can you even take food products like that abroad?

I hate those weddings where guests have to pay for a holiday somewhere they might not otherwise have chosen.

Thats a bit tight. If the guests have forked out to travel, they should at least have some good cake at the end of it!

I had to suppress Hmm at my friend who was wondering if very cheap dishwasher tablets were any good, as she was packing to go to Centre Parks, for a week during the school summer hols.

Wow. You know you could make money writing a comedy series about them. That would probably make them happy.

Oh, if we are all adding our stories too...

My friend and her boyfriend had an argument over who had paid for a 5p lollipop. A proper argument.

But when you say guests are 'forking out to go on holiday' they must be happy to do this, otherwise they would have declined the invitation surely?
And as Imperial has already said, have they checked they can take food products like that abroad?
Is this a close friend of yours?

They are very bad. We once found 50p on the floor and she argued over who saw it first.

Shock please update us after the wedding. What is she wearing, a dressing gown?
I wonder if we should compile a list of money saving tips.

I'll start: No need for the bride to fork out for posh shoes. Slippers or flip flops will do the job just as well, and will create a talking point for your guests.

Sounds like great recipe for disastrous, long, prosperous, happy, union.
There nothing like cheap and stingy husband to loath, good luck to her.

Stealth - it will be a barefoot wedding on the beach Grin.

Money-saving tips...

Hmmm, her something blue could be the mould on her cakes.

I know a couple who are both ridiculously tight - they are very happy together, finding new ways to save pennies is one of their favourite pastimes and definitely something that unites them.

TBH it can a bit trying socialising with them tho.

That's the thing with getting married abroad (I presume it's abroad?) though isn't it, you have to be prepared for people not being able to afford to go or prefering to spend their time on a family holiday instead.

Doesn't sound like you will miss much OP (Certainly not cake anyway Grin)

I'm deeply disapproving of a pile of cupcakes at a wedding anyway, but even more so if they've been made for three days and lugged on a plane and then presented, all sweaty and crushed, in a pile of boxes. YANBU.

Is this AIBU? Confused

Her mum has bought her a dress and its very nice. She hasnt scrimped on that. But of course, they arent paying for that bit.

I just laughed because I pictured Old Aunt Fanny (fictional) asking innocently, "wheres the cake?" and then baulking at the contents of the ominous white box.

"You lot are posh
So give us some dosh"
by any chance?

A relative used to make birthday cakes for all the family.

He was a bit of a weird one, you wouldn't see him for ages, then he would call and say "I'm coming, don't worry about cake" and turn up with a beautiful cake.

Until the day he came, and his dog, (who my parents detested as they hate dogs and didn't like them in the house, but his 'baby' went everywhere with him). Birthday cake was 'got at' by said dog, which was very upsetting, until someone noticed the inside was green.

I think the dog then proceeding to throw up all over the carpet was the proof of the pudding.

Grin

I think if they were stopped at the airport with a suitcase full of boxed homemade cakes, I would wee myself a little with laughter. Just pay the £40! What a hassle for such poor results!

I'm surprised this particular bride is planning to wear a dress for her beach wedding - surely she could have got a bikini on ebay and pair of speedos for the groom? Grin
