To believe Theresa May has to stand down NOW

I am watching Theresa May on television this morning and can't believe what I am hearing. I do not feel she knows what she's doing.

It goes like this from interviews this morning, this is Sky's.

May: "Rioters need to know their behaviour is not acceptable again officers looking through CCTV footage of thugs with their faces"

May: "Wait and see what sentences will be passed on these people".

May appeals for family and friends to shop the thugs.

May: Refuses to consider water cannon or army.

More May Madness: "I ask parents to ask where your children are and if they are out on the streets then stop it."

Stop it? This is her solution. She has to go, I hadn't got an opinion on her before this morning, but that woman has got to go.

The thugs are quaking in their boots. NOT

May: "They way we police in this country is by consent"

There is no consent you stupid woman.

Eammon Holmes: Peoples' consent is they want the army, the water cannon, and control to be restored. Will you give them the peoples consent?"

May: Getting rattled, "We police by consent and we ask the community blah blah blah."

May: "It's possible to cut the police budgets and still for the police to be effective."

The police are not effective what is she watching?

Eamonn not doing a bad job of questioning her, needs to be more hardline but best interview this morning.

She is saying she will stop this by asking for people to shop the rioters, having police look through cctv and the ones already arrested being in court.

I feel more frightened now than I ever did before listening to her.

I want someone in who will take decisive action, get the army in put a curfew in place to back up the police.

Yes, of course. Because sacking her would be a really good idea during a time of utter chaos.

There is a COBRA meeting this am, no doubt she will have more to say after that.

They'll never sack her until this is over, if she needs to be sacked.

I do think she is in over her head. I also think she is powerless in terms of sending in the army. I thought only Parliament could do that?

Our ambulance crews and firefighters are coming under increasing attacks. People's homes being burned, businesses for five generations burned down and we have a home secretary who is bleeting about policing by consent, looking at CCTV and bringing those arrested to court.

Ideally no I don't want to see the Army on our streets, but that is far far far preferable to London being set alight people's home gone, no likely to be insured and life being at risk.

Do you really want the rioters to continue to control the streets?

No politician of any shade is voicing support for either of these measures at present. So unless you are saying the police are requesting these measures and the Home Office is blocking them, it's a non-issue. Unless you want politicians to overturn operational decisions made by the police, and impose solutions on them

Internet forums, even when there is increasing frequency and stridency of opinion, still isn't a reliable guide to public opinion.

But I am enjoying the change of heart on MN from general disparagement (even hostility to the armed Forces and their families) to acclaim and complete faith in their abilities.

I hope they are out in force tonight, scaring the shit out of these marauding amoral bastards.

I don't think the Army or any of the other two Armed Forces wants to be on the streets, and as LtEveDallas pointed out on another thread, military riot control isn't fluffy or pleasant; be careful what you wish for.

I don't think Theresa May should go; our police do police by consent; where I live abroad the police are normally armed and it is still a shock to see it. My dh used to work where there were several protests and he said it was amazing to try to get to the office through the crash barriers and around the water cannon, and to walk past armed police in full riot gear.

I do think water cannon would be an idea however as they seem to keep some protests here peaceful.

YABU. This is an unprecedented level of violence, it's part of a more general gang culture and it's involving children and teens. She's right to call for the rest of the general public to make a stand and turn in anyone we think has been looting. It's our country they're ruining after all. She's right to point out that CCTV footage is being examined - that's how they picked up so many after the student riots, remember. And she's right not to put the police on the offensive with weapons. We know the fuss that ensues when some mouthy protester gets clocked by a copper.... imagine if some 13 year-old kid was killed by a rubber bullet or whatever. I think the next move may be a temporary curfew in the worst-hit areas. Let May get on with the job.

It is the people who are terrified and can see the police cant do anything to keep them or their property safe who are calling for the army, many politicians on television this morning are saying it should be considered, as should water cannons.

May has ruled both out BEFORE the COBRA meeting. We can't carry on as we are because it is simply not working. The thugs have control of the streets.

I know 2 officers who offered to come into work yesterday night and were told 'Sorry, can't afford the overtime'.

How can they be effective when they're more concerned about budgets?

Does May really think these feral feckers actually care about being caught or going to prison? This is where the problem lies as the looters/rioters are not bothered by this. They are not bothered about having a criminal record. They don't care that they have ruined their own communities or even possibly have killed innocent people with the fires they have started.

I think possibly bringing the army in to support the police in numbers is a possible immediate solution to clear the streets and restore order.

Awomancalledhorse: that'll be because all officers are working 12 hour shifts (and in practice many are exceeding them). They'll want them in, rested and ready to work, on that gruelling shift pattern.

Yes they will be boasting today on fb etc about what they stole, how many pigs they hit, where they should meet tonight. I hope their families/friends have some sort of moral compass but I somehow Doubt it.

Mitmoo: I'm not sure if the nature of COBRA has actually been explained. The PM chaired COBRA is today. But COBRA also runs at a working level, and similar meetings at various levels of officialdom will have been going on.

Her statements will be giving the agreed cross-Whitehall plan - about which the PM would have been briefed during his absence. It would be a misunderstanding of Whitehall process (for that is all COBRA really is) to think she is acting as a maverick.
