to want at least a months notice for staff training days

why does my school give less than a weeksnotice.

i have written a letter, but not sure to post it or not. this is how it goes.

Dear Mrs xxxxxxx
I am unhappy about the short notice that is given about staff training day, I know these staff training day are important and they need to be done.
However as a working mother, i need to arrange childcare for my son. I am not the only parent that faces this, so would like more than a week notice of upcoming staff training days.

there is no reason why they should be only giving you a weeks notice - at the school i work at all of next years training day dates are already available on the website for parents to access, they also get calenders at the end of each term with all the important dates for next term on (IYSWIM).
Your letter is fine - to the point and reasonable.

Do they not print the dates of inset dates on websites or on handouts at the beginning of the school year?

The inset dates are generally well known in advance, not just sprung upon parents.

If I'm wrong and the school only do give you a week's notice, it might be an idea to gain more parental support. Obtain signatures in the playground and present it to the head as a larger protest to carry more weight.

Training days are INSET days, and you should be told at the beginning of the year when they are.

In service training = INSET

I thought there was a set notice period fir changing term dates( half a term?)

The dates for our council are available for 2 years ahead although may change training days.

the website hasn't been updates since may 2010, and when i read all the info pack when ds started school no dates where in there about staff training days

They should have told you about them long before now. What sort of notice do you usually get?

INSET = In Service Educational Training

All the schools I know publish their training days before the start of the school year along with the term dates and other important events. If the school is only giving you a weeks notice that's pretty shocking!

Definitely send a letter of complaint. If other schools can plan their training dates a year in advance so can they!

Ask for the dates to be available at the beginning of the year. Don't they publish a school calendar?

The council one won't have them. Schools fix their own training days.

ah no knowledge of the welsh system I'm afraid

Our (English) LEA publish their INSET (training days) alongside the calendar of school dates, available online and issued from school as well

Is it definitely a training day rather than a day off for the Royal Wedding? The school I work at always publishes inset days at the beginning of the academic year. However, there were only a few weeks notice for the day we got off for the Royal Wedding.

no school calender and looked on the council website and they directed me to the link for the school's website.

Auntie - double check that there isn't a proper school calendar with all the term/holiday/training day dates on. If not, then your letter is completely reasonable. Tell them how much notice you want (ie, most schools tell parents when training days will be before the beginning of the school year - i know when ds's are for next school year.)

i will speak to his teacher at parents evening about it, which is next week...i may have missed something
