Books for a 7yo confident reader

Can anyone share with me any books their 7ish-yo DC have enjoyed? We’ve hit a bit of a reading rut. DS is an excellent reader and mainly leans towards fiction or comics - he loves an encyclopaedia or fact book. But he seems bored of everything right now - we’re re-reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the umpteenth time.

We visit the library and he’s tried a few from there, including some Dick King-Smith and David Walliams and wasn’t keen on them. Is he too young for Harry Potter?

My 7yo has read the first 4 Harry Potter - she could read the rest but I think the content is too much for her. Both my DC love any Enid Blyton, easy enough reading but with stories that hold their interest. David Baddiel books seem to go down well, and Horrid Henry (which I hate).

Kids who like comics also like - Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate, Barry Loser etc. And we subscribe to the Phoenix and the Beano.

DS(just turned 8) enjoys the Tom Fletcher books (currently reading The Danger Gang).

He also enjoyed the Wizards of Once books.

Thanks - that’s interesting about Harry Potter, I’ see if he likes it. I found a lovely set in a charity shop when he was a baby and I’ve been waiting for a time to bust them out!

My son read Lord of the Rings at that age...

(I did try to dissuade him, remembering how I'd got bogged down in it aged 11 - and I was a much better reader than he - but he insisted)

He was eight and a half when Deathly Hallows came out, and waiting for it. I don't think it did him any harm, but I'm in a minority here (I don't see a problem with the Jacqueline Wilson books either).

Not too young for the first few Harry Potters (they get darker at book 4).

Agree that Tom Fletcher is great, as is the 13 Storey Tree House series (though this might be a bit of a low level if he is a strong reader). My dc also loved The Bad Guys which is a comic style book, but very funny.

Some David Walliams books are better than others - Gansta Granny is one of the better ones.

The Captain Underpants books are good.

The Hobbit perhaps, but I'd probably leave it a year or two.

Dd turned 7 this month and has chewed through the first 5 HP books this year. She’s been told she has to wait now until she’s 8 for the next one.

My son is 7 and an avid reader, he's read quite a lot of the books mentioned and loved them, but is happy to try anything really. We make use of the local library and often ask the librarian for recommendations. I also use Amazon to look at a book he has liked and see what other people have bought or what it recommends.

We started reading the Twig series to DS2 when he was about 5 ... you may need to look for Edge Chronicles. There are lots of them, and DS2 (now 11) is still a fan.
