Does anyone really like their kitchen bin?

I need to buy a kitchen bin. There's no getting away from it being in a prominent position, so I'd like it to look good.

But the stylish ones (I particularly like the Branbantia ones with the tall legs) get terrible reviews - for dints, finger marks, hard to clean, faff to use, hard to get the bag out etc.

Can anyone recommend a lovely stylish kitchen bin? Must open at the top - no pedal bins please.

Ours is a simple human one, slightly oval shaped. The bags are just from Sainsbury's, you don't have to buy their own brand if you don't want to.
We previously had a brabantia, but it was one of those where you push the lid slightly to open it, then close it with your hand...so this one has a foot pedal that lifts the lid, much better.
I had to wait rather a number of years for the brabantia to die though! Grin

It lifts the whole lid, btw, properly up.
Both are/we're steel.

It's a necessaries evil, isn't it?

Unfortunately I don't have any recommendations, but I am thinking of getting a bin with a sensor to open the lid. So I dont have to touch it.

I love mine. It’s a tall slim copper coloured metal bin, v elegant. I chose it first, then did the colour scheme for the whole new kitchen around it! (Pale peach walls, cream units, copper lights and features)
But you wouldn’t like it, OP, as it is a pedal bin!
Incidentally, why do you want to touch a dirty bin with your hands, instead of having a foot pedal that leaves both hands free and clean?

I have a brabantia, it's just a white fairly inoffensive pedal bin. It wasn't cheap but it's lasted well and cleans easily. I don't buy the branded bags, supermarket own brand ones fit in it just fine!

This is our kitchen bin. It's huge and we love it (which I know is a bit bonkers but it makes us happy). Boring but true.

There's a wheelchair user in the household and a pedal bin wouldn't work for them. Must be a top opening bin.

Current bin is a sensor bin but it's temperamental and has finally had enough of unwitting visitors (and our cleaner) whacking the lid down rather than letting the sensor do its thing. So thinking a push top might be better?

@LBOCS2 Can you keep the mechanism clean? It's not too fiddly / prone to gunk?

Actually - think yours is the same @ChampagneWorries ?

I'm now trying to decide if white looks awful...

Ah, very sorry, now I see why no pedals.
I imagine all the sensor ones give out after a while tbh. Brabantia usually have a lifetime guarantee, or 25 years or similar- I've read on MN that their customer service is v good, and they send out replacement lids/parts.

I also hate bins. When we had our kitchen refitted We had both bins hidden. What looks like a double draw under the sink is actually a giant draw with two bins in for general waste and recycling. Before that we had a tall bin from John Lewis, a fake Brabantia it currently has kindling stored in it in the shed.

I have this Brabantia bin and I really do love it, it was a crazy amount to spend on a bin but I do feel it was worth it. Doesn’t take much at all to keep it clean.

Yes! I love my bin! (in Father Jack Hackett voice). It's in three compartments, top for general waste, middle drawer for bags or cleaning bits and bottom for recycling which lifts out as a bucket. It's white plastic so easy to see any grot and is on casters which I love. You can wheel it over to your work surface while you're chopping. I think it's Korean (judging by the stuff that came with it) and probably not very stylish but I don't care, I think it's great.

I use lift up top bins because I can't find a pedal bin that doesn't shut as soon as I remove my foot, therefore ensuring that I need to keep opening it over and over when I have a heap of stuff to put in, often soggy or messy stuff. I also find that pedal bins don't always open fully, and I end up with stuff all over the edge and on the floor.

Those bins where you push the crud in and the lid goes inside should be banned, they are totally useless.

I had the perfect bin, the lid lifted up and stayed up, on a hinge, not one that slid back and only gave you half a space to put stuff in.

I do have one that is great, but it is a 40 litre one, I think - Addis Lift Up bin, it might be suitable for you @SticksarelifesaysCassie

Unfortunately it doesn't come in a smaller size but they do have a smaller one with a smaller aperture/not so good lid.

I’ve got the Joseph Joseph totem bin which I’ve seen people on here say they hate but ours is great. No marks or anything and it’s about 3 years old. The lid could go in a dishwasher if you were that way inclined. I just give it a spray with antibac and wipe it. I just buy supermarket liners too, not their crazy priced ones.

I love my barbantia bin. We have the pop up lid one and yes we did get a free replacement bit when the clip broke after about 9 years. The customer service was great.

I previously had the Brabantia 50L touch open/close bin which was a fantastic bin, had it around 13 years and only replaced it as it we were finding it was starting to get smelly around half full due to an increase in recycling the bin was taking longer to fill.
Now got the Joseph Joseph totem with 30L for residual waste & 20L drawer underneath for recycling. Plus a 4L food waste bin which sits inside the main bin.
Very easy to clean.

@Ikora My jealousy knows no bounds! I would love to hide the bin away. Sadly no room. But if we ever redo the kitchen (fat chance - frankly) its top of the list.

The totem bin looks fab. Our recycling volume is huge though - we use a 85l tub and fill it easily every week. Mainly milk bottles and cereal packets and newspapers. I'm not sure the totem would accommodate that.

The one you have @Bubblesbath is like the one I was looking at. I was looking at the smaller size though.

I really like my bin. It's German I think. Koziol brand. You can buy them on Amazon (seems to be out of stock) but I think I bought mine direct but that was before Brexit.

Oooh, I'd love to see a picture of your kitchen! Peach, cream and copper; 3 of my favourite colours.

Nope. I hate it. I use a bag on the door handle - easy to use, chuck out each day. I am sick to death of Brabantia stupid bags being stuffed to the gunnels and ripped on the way out and taking a least two people to get it out.

I've had three over the last 20 years that I've got on well with.

First one was a semi commercial BIG bin that was the size of a small wheely bin on wheels. I loved this as it wheeled into the kitchen then wheeled away, but I had it to scrape things into whilst cooking.

The next house was much smaller and I had a simply human bin as a house warming gift. I love this as its hands free, top opener pop open lid. I can operate with my elbow so don't need to constantly wash my hands when preparing food.

The latest bin is an IKEA bin for a integral unit. It's the size of half a base cupboard and has a lid. I love this one as it pulls out right below my chopping area and I can drop my peelings in easily. It also has the other half of the cupboard with a similar bin for recycling.

All of these have been easy to use. First one is too big for a normal domestic kitchen.
Second is lovely but can get splashed and I'm constantly polishing the stainless steel.
Third IKEA bin is excellent but, it's IKEA and doesn't fit into anything but IKEA units. I'd choose this one in a Howden kitchen but it won't fit so I'll be looking again very soon.

It's sounding like the simply human top pop might suit your needs for a wheelchair user.
