Does it work? Do you really have a nice clean house and still have time to yourself? How do you work it to suit you?

I've just moved into a lovely new build house and I never want my new one to get grubby. I'm hoping this will work. But then I'm suspicious I'll just spend hours every day doing housework.

I want to be an organised mum so I will follow this thread with interest. I am much more organised than I used to be but there is lots of room for improvement :)

I found I just spend hours each day doing housework, like you say! Some love it though, there is a thread on it, under housekeeping maybe

I’ve tried it recently and there are too many tasks not included in the lists that really have to be done daily or weekly, so it doesn’t really work.
The idea of tidying for a defined time is good but that was already around with Unfuck your Habitat.
The Apartment Therapy 20 minutes per day schedule worked better for me.

@Superlooper I will have a look, thanks. I'm suspicious that I can maintain the standard of cleanliness I want in just 30 minutes a day. But I like the structure and routine of it.

@DameSylvieKrin I like the look of that one, but she only hoovers and cleans the floors once a week Confused. My entire house needs hoovering at least twice a week.

It’s true that the target audience probably doesn’t have kids yet. I have a (cheapo) robot vacuum cleaner that I run daily so it’s clean enough for me.

Hoovering high traffic areas gets done daily As per of the level 1 jobs that should take about 15 minutes, but the deeper cleans of each room get done once a week. When you start you’re supposed to do a “boot camp” of sorting stuff out (having a clear out etc) and then it should just be maintenance. I got into it when I needed to get into a new groove for keeping on top of things better and it worked wonders. Yeah I have to tidy up mess in the kids room most days but at least I know they’re getting dusted and I’m hoovering under their beds weekly so it’s never that bad underneath clutter. the target audience is definitely mums, hence the name!

No. It doesn’t. You can’t do it properly in the time limit.

I spend £30 a week on a cleaner instead - worth every penny.

It does for me but only because I’m religious about stopping after 30 minutes. You just pick up the list where you left off next time.

Also I should say, TOMM is about cleaning not tidying. You should be tidying as you go along throughout the day.

It really works!!! When I was doing it I’d constantly be saying to my partner ‘I can’t believe how clean our house is’ and it felt like we barely did anything.

@ChidiAnnaKendrick

I would love a cleaner. But we can't justify £150 a month on it currently. Besides, I'm not sure I would be happy with what the cleaner had done or that it would be to my standard.

I've done the bootcamp twice - my problem is the daily tasks don't need doing as frequently as they're supposed to be done. My house is quite tidy anyway and I like Saturday morning cleaning with the kids and DP. I didn't like fitting 30mins a day into my week for cleaning what already felt clean.

I loosely follow tomm. It's great to maintain the cleanliness but there are tonnes of things that need done that aren't on it. I don't spend all day cleaning but I always have something to do. Thursday's are kitchen days and half the staff on that list I am doing multiple times a day anyway so I catch up with other things in that day too.

It's good if you like structure, I have 1 child so it's easy to fit around her nap .

You don't need to follow it religiously.
At first you'll probably spend more time on it. Within a few weeks you'll be easily on top of it and cracking through each day without noticing.

I love the structure.
I like ticking off lists of jobs done.
I like racing the clock to get as much done in 30 mins as possible (easier with upbeat music playing)
I like that it gives me permission to stop after 30 mins. Enough is enough.
And yes, the more you do it the cleaner your house will get.

It worked for me but I did it slightly differently. I swapped bathroom and kitchen so I did a little bit of kitchen everyday and the bathroom in one go. I also had to do it 6 days a week to fit in all the room. I also found the daily jobs of emptying dishwasher, putting on a load of washing and putting it away took 30 mins as well.

It’s 30 minutes PLUS level one jobs which I think is fine. It definitely does work if you actually read about it and set a timer. I found it easier when DD was sleeping in the day still - I very rarely get a full half hour of her staying occupied now and when I do it’s often when I make dinner. However when she’s (one day hopefully soon) more prone to keeping herself occupied I’ll definitely go back to it. It’s true that your house gets cleaner and cleaner but you have to prioritise jobs from the lists that need doing and stop after 30 minutes.

Hope this helps.

This is a great idea! I’m a lurker on thr Facebook group and have dabbled in the method- I can see how it works!

It’s a great system. I found at the start it takes a bit longer until you get in the swing of it. You can also tweak it to suit you for example I have a smallish hallway with not much in it so on hallway day I could fit in a few other jobs. I don’t always do all the kitchen jobs each week, no ones cutlery drawer needs cleaning weekly! Grin

I do cleaning everyday as that works best for me.
Every morning I wipe over the kitchen whilst the baby sleeps.
After baby's morning feed I'll wipe surfaces in living room/hoover if needed.
Bathroom I go over every day too but DP also gives stuff wipes over etc to help me out.
One day a week when I do all skirting boards and high bits usually when DP is home so he can watch the baby.
I don't like to do too much housework when I'm looking after DS as I'd rather spend the time with him 😂.
Once a week I clean the washing machine out and washing machine draw etc.

Sounds like a lot. But spread out over the week I really don't spend longer than 30 mins each day probably even less.

Report
SimpleAndPlanned · 21/10/2019 22:02

@clare8allthepies I don't do my cutlery drawer weekly. If it looks fine I just choose another drawer to do.

OP - it's working for me so far. But ideally we split the jobs between the two of us so instead of 45 mins for one person it's half that.

I like lists and ticking things off. I bend it to fit my house and you stick to your timer!

I've been doing tomm for a year now although I do cheat and miss the Friday focus. Here's how I do it:-
Level 1 jobs every day even weekend- wash dry and put away a load
Hoover downstairs
Clean bathrooms
(Takes 15-20 mins)
Then Monday's 30 mins on lounge
Tuesday hall (only takes about ten minutes)
Weds bedrooms (takes about 45 mins esp if doing bedding)
Thurs- kitchen (40 mins)
Fri- if I've had a busy week I'll do anything I didn't get a chance to do here ...thinking of doing bedding on Friday instead of every other weds
The biggest plus things are clean bathroom and downstairs always being hovered - I think I do need to add the Friday focus though as over the year It's not looking quite so tidy as it seemed the first couple of months

The clean windows is a bonus too - I used to hardly ever clean inside of windows now it's weekly
