I'd ask your dad what he likes (some people have a great adversion to chardonay .. I hate merlot) and perhaps hint he can bring a bottle of it !

Off the top of my head

Booze (baileys/wine/beer/vodka)
Soft drinks (coke/mixers/fruit juice)
Snacky stuff (crisps/nuts/sausage rolls)
Christmas dinner (turkey/stuffing/cranberry sauce/bread sauce/ sausages wrapped in bacon/sprouts/carrots/peas/roast spuds/parsnips)
Box of roses
Pate/ham/nice bread/pickles/jacket potatoes/cold meats and salad for Boxing day
Cheese and biscuits

Plus easy dinners for a couple of days

Oh that's nice Marne, have you met her yet?

I usually remember everything but forget to put something out. Was the stuffing one year and we only noticed half way through the meal so I got it out of the oven

Onions, butter, breadcrumbs, thyme, rosemary, whatever other seasoning you want.

Make on Christmas eve.
I briefly fry some onions in butter (too much butter!!), and then pour the melted butter into the bowl with the breadcrumbs, and add all the other bits. The stuffing shouldn't be too wet, just enough to sort of hold it together if you want to make balls.

Cover with clingfilm, leave out overnight - house will smell of thyme and herbs....

In the morning stuff the bird.

This one's good. sophie grigson recipe
I tend to bake mine separately in a greased dish or make it into croquettes by rolling little sausages of the stuff , dip in flour and then fry.
Makes sure the stuffing is cooked and the bird!

NB don't forget that if you do use it to stuff the bird, add the weight of the stuffing to that of the bird to get the right cooking time from the combined weight.

In this household you cant forget chilli sauce to go with bubble & sqeak sandwiches on boxing day or you may as well cancel Christmas .
