I'm looking for ideas for gifts. What gifts do you love getting? It can be anything! Practical, luxurious, simple. I have a mixed bag of people to buy for so interested to see what other people like!

Flowers and good quality chocolate. I love both but rarely get given either. Probably because most people think people think they are unimaginative gifts.
Also a gift voucher for garden centre / nursery so I can choose a plant or two for the garden.

The one thing I hate to receive is something I have to display in my home. My parents seem to order exclusively from some kind of ugly picture frame catalogue and I really dislike the pressure to have something I haven't chosen and don't particularly like taking up space. We have some ugly frame shockers from our wedding too. Dh knows I like scented candles but never seems to get it quite right. It's only recently I've realised I must be a nightmare to buy for Blush I do love a box of champagne truffles as they feel too posh to ever buy for myself. I have a friend who always picks great books to give as gifts, but again that can be a minefield. I err on the side of caution with people I don't know very well, something that can be eaten/drunk and wont take up any room

Thanks everyone! Keep em coming.

I have to say, candles and chocs are always a winner for me but nobody gets them. I think people have this perception of them being naff gifts but I know lots of people who I think would like them.

What's the feeling on gift sets?

I might be unusual but I love either the big Sanctuary or big Champneys sets from Boots. I buy one for myself from my parents when they are the offer of the week.

Quality honey, beautiful note cards, beeswax candles, dark chocolate Florentines, pretty lavender bags, padded coathangers and a good hand and nail cream.

My DH appreciates decent cheese and crackers, a magazine subscription, different gin and special shampoo and shower gels.

I don't really like gift sets as I have quite sensitive skin and I'm therefore fussy about what I use. I tend to prefer stocking up for myself in the Boots sale after Christmas

  • Bailey's
  • Any Neal's Yard stuff
  • Fluffy socks!
  • Simple earrings (just a nice pair of studs)
  • Chocolate
  • Voucher for Zara, Oasis/the cinema

I really dislike receiving scarfs, paraphernalia with my name or initial or it, or little glass ornaments!

If I couldn't have a rug/thow/blankie/car I'd chose a motorbike or a torch or a boat. Torch or boat.

Oh and gift sets to be added to things I don't like. 99% of the time they're perfumed rubbish.

The only one I've gotten that I genuinely liked was an Yves Saint Laurent one which had Black Opium perfume, a little mascara and an eye liner in it.

Vouchers for massages/pedicures etc would always be wonderful. Also like bath oil, nice pens, thank you notelets, posh kitchen equipment, yummy foodstuffs.

Not fond of novelty presents (eg, wacky socks/funny books etc), skin creams, ornaments, photo frames, cuddly toys, anything with someone else's holiday destination written on it.

A throw or blanket for sofa use. Smelly candles
A nice gift set, thinking soap and glory spa sanctuary (Good deals at boots around Xmas)
"Fake flower arrangements" in a nice vase
Candle holders
Wine Grin
Reading back, I'm pretty simple to buy for but no one gets me any of this! Maybe cause it's not the 'usual presents' apart from wine.

Massage voucher always welcome. As is champagne, cuddly toy, scented candle, decent chocolate, marrons glacé, Iberian or Parma ham.

Don't like purses/wallets, toiletries because a lot of stuff makes me break out so I always end up giving it away.

But yo be honest, I can usually find some beauty in any sincerely given gift. I don't like passive-aggressive gifts, SIL is the queen of that. I just realised I don't like purses/wallets as a gift because she gives me a horrible one every year (not hanseled, which is really bad luck).

A torch.

In order to read the folio edition of Wuthering Heights because Lockwood the fop stuffed the candle.

Rollin' it's obvious. A tranny by the pillow and a Pifco with a leaky blue battery to read one more page of the Fab 208 album.
