Disney infinity help, I'm clueless!

My dn is having a PS4 for Xmas and my mum (dn's nan) has said to SIL that she'll get Disney infinity. None of us have a clue about what parts we need to get.
She's not interested in Star Wars or marvel but that seems to be what 3 version is or I think it is?
I've seen figures like tinker bell and Aladdin and jasmine which she would love, not sure which version that is. I've seen 3 software and playsets. Do we need all of it?
Please can someone she'd some light on this?

I'd personally stay well away from these games where you have to continuously buy more and more figures to experience the whole of the game. I was caught out like this with sky landers and probably spent £400 odd quid on them in total... The ones you get in starter packs are just not enough to fully experience the game

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Disney-Infinity-3-0-DisneyPixars-Inside-Out-Play-Set-PS4-Xbox-One-PS3-Xbox-36-/311443152232?hash=item4883755d68:g:gtgAAOSwgNRV8thP

I would get that. All old figures and play sets will work with the new ones. I will explain more tomorrow but I'm on my tablet and typing on this thing is a pita.

Thank you skullyton!

Blatant, I understand what you're saying but hopefully if more characters are wanted down the line they can be birthday/Christmas presents from various family members.

I decided to slog it out a little.

The starter sets come with the game, the portal and two figures and a set piece to access their section of the game.
Each version of infinity has several set pieces which are their own little world and several characters that can be used in that world. There is also a free play toybox area where you can create your own environment.

1 had cars, toy story, and the incredibles, and then figures like tinkerbelle, jasmine..etc for the toybox
2 was spiderman, avengers and guardians of the galaxy
3 is star wars and Inside out.

Disney made sure that all the figures and set pieces from 1 and 2 will work with 3. So you can buy the new one and still get the older figures and play sets to use with it.

Sorry, the play sets won't work, you will need the game disks for 1 and 2 but the figures are all useable in the toybox area on 3.

Wow thank you skullyton, I really appreciate it.

So am I right in thinking we have to get the Star Wars starter kit then we can get any playsets or characters?

Yes am on my computer now so can get it down properly.

Once you have the starter set, you can use the playsets from 3.0, and any other figures from 1 & 2.0 in the toybox/freeplay.

If you want to buy the other playsets from versions 1 & 2.0 you will need the game disks, which you can buy separately, and aren't that expensive!

The playsets from 1.0 and 2.0 will not work on playmode 3.0 you will only be able to play in toybox mode, which is a bit like minecraft... Like Skullyton said you will need just the disc of 1.0 and 2,0 ....

Play Set Mode

Playsets that you can buy,

1.0 Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters University, The Incredibles, Cars, The Lone Ranger, and Toy Story.

2.0 Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy. Spiderman, The Avengers.

3.0 Star Wars Rise Against the Empire, Star wars Twilight of the Republic, Inside Out,
These play sets have their own unique campaign, which can be played with up to two players. However, only characters from a specific franchise can play in their respective play-set (for example, Mr. Incredible can't be used in the Pirates of the Caribbean play set), meaning two figures from the same series are required to play a play-set in split-screen multiplayer. Playing through play set unlocks objects and vehicles that can be used in the Toy Box mode.

Toy Box Mode

Toy Box mode allows players to create their own game in an open-world arena. Players can mix and match everything that is unlocked within each of the play-sets including characters, weapons and gadgets.....

The rest of the figures that don't belong in the playsets can only be played in Toybox mode....

We have the first 2 versions and just got the kids the 3.0, we brought 12 figures 3 playsets and just the 3.0 disc as they do love it, they go back and forwards from the 1.0 and 2.0 so still getting a lot of use from the first one...
