Crystal growing kit for dd1.

Dd 8 wants a science kit for Christmas. I have been reliably informed that most home chemistry kits that you can buy these days are crap because the chemicals that made them interesting are now considered too dangerous to use at home. (Dh swears he had a nuclear kit when he was younger!) But that the crystal ones are still pretty good.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a particular kit please?

No recommendations but I can remember getting crystal gardens (as they were called) for my DC. They really enjoyed watching the crystals grow.

Amazon do crystal trees that grow in a day -great fun and very cheap!

I'very ordered a couple of tree things, they do look good. I'm looking for something a bit more sciencey if that makes sense.

We are going for a decent book of science experiments instead. I remember growing crystals from a saturated solution of washing soda and a paperclip when I was little, so we'll give that a go.

I have just bought a Crystal growing kit from The Works. It was in a '2 for £10' offer so I got a "Make hideous things like snot" kit as well. No idea how good the crystal kit is, but the pictures on the box look excellent. Hmm

The 4m crystal growing kit which you can get from brightminds. Co.UK is fab. That site as a whole is good.

this one is pretty good and detailed although as with all crystal growing, requires patience!

Thank you for those. I'll see which one suits us best but a little inside knowledge helps.
Trickydecision she would also like the snot ones but I'm not sure I do. Xmas Confused

Not very helpful but growing crystals from a kit I got when I was 8 or 9 is one of my happiest childhood Christmas memories Grin

I've bought a bag of copper sulphate compound to do this with. I was going to buy a kit but read an amazon review saying the kit wasn't great and they made their own with csc instead. Just got to remember to google for instructions actually so thanks for the reminder!

He's not old enough for that set but maybe he really did have one. Can you imagine being allowed to sell something like that now!Shock
