  1. A nice big scented yankee candle. Balsam & Cedar is finally on the way out. Pref piney but not toilety.

  1. A trad german glittery advent calender BUT WITH CHOCOLATE TOO

  1. Ideas on what to do with 1000 pine cones- ideally a way of making them into a lovely xmassy garland.

yy Yankee Candles but I don't like pine. (Christmas Cookie, Sparkling Cinnamon, Red Apple Wreath, MacIntosh Spice. I feel a trip to the Yankee Candle stall coming up

Hmm ^glittery advent calender. Don't want glitter in the chocolate. I've got a lovely little painted cabinet with 24 compartments ,each holding a resin decoration to hang on a musical tree(about 12" high). I put a couple of sweets in each compartment. We've had it for years, it's part of our Christmas Tradition.

Pine-cones, you could wire them together with fuse wire. Or spray some silver/gold or roll in glitter and glue then pile them in a large glass bowl.
If you have a real fire or even a bonfire ,you can burn them, they are supposed to smell lovely. (Not tried this as I've got a real flame gas fire with those synthetic 'coals'. Don't think it would appreciate having bits of woodland lobbed in)

Oh, I'm not keen on food flavoured ones. I had a nice snowflakey one once. Do love yankee but wish they were not so blardy expensive.

Not glitter in choc you arse, like these but with choc in! So I dont have to buy evil Ben 10 or similar one instead, as DS is unfortunatly conditioned to chocolate even at tender age of 4.

Have sprayed some, and had then in a bell jar for a while.... but I want to make garlands- cant think how to attach the wire...

My favourite christmas candle/home fragrance is "Gold, Frankinscense and Myrhh" but I can't remember who makes it and it is getting harder and harder to find.

I also love "Noel" by Crabtree and Evelyn.

I hate the foody ones as they always smell rather sickly when I get them home no matter how nice they seem in the shop

I love Christmas and everything about it. I can't wait to get the decorations out!

I'm going to look for the 'Noel' one- quite like some C&E stuff.

Me too, viper, going to sort out the basement soon which will mean a good long stare at all the xmas stuff Grin

I want pine cones ! :)
Im sure ds will love foraging for them but I'm not sure where or ebb to look.

I also want a decent way of displaying cards as they always end up in a heap. Hmm

glitterykitty I was in Homebase yesterday and they had loads of these style of candles half price. Not sure if they were actual Yankee or another brand but they're the ones in the big jars.
For me it has to be something with cinnamon in the scent as that is the most Christmassy smell there is.

As for the pine cones could you get some wire and make a lovely homemade wreath? I got a lovely plain wreath from Hobbycraft last year and decorated it with some pine cones, red and cream ribbon and some fairy lights.

Just look under pine trees! Don't do what I did - I didn't realise they open up in the warmth, kept walking past huge piles of them on the floor because they hadn't opend up yet Blush.

That sounds lovely chirp. I'd love to do that with the fairy lights and the ribbon! Don't suppose you have a picture?

Where did you hang it? Guess must have been inside with the lights?

I made mine a bit more traditional with spruce and holly, along with fake berries, pine cones, orange slices and cinnamon with ribbon - it looked nice but was very spikey to make! I think might use something like bay this year.

Hey pootles, no, it was on my front door. Last year (at about this time) Ikea were selling little sets of fairy lights that ran off a little battery pack. It's still up in the loft at the moment so don't have a photo unfortunately. I love the orange slices and cinnamon idea thought, might see if I can jiggle it about about and add a couple of these! Thanks.

OOoh I likey that idea. I love having a wreath on the door at Christmas! So you just hid the battery pack round the back of the wreath?

I must say I didn't get on with orange slices sooo well, they seemed to shrivel up a bit, I never got them quite dry, and they didn't smell either.

But the cinnamon is easy - you can get huge bags from the 'forrin foods' bit in supermarket, then just buy some ginghamy type ribbon to tye them in bunches.

Thanks, how did you dry out the oranges slices? I was thinking a few hours on a low heated oven or in the airing cupboard?

Report
Pootles2010 · 08/09/2011 10:49

I tried both of those. Did them in the oven, then in the airing cupboard, on top of a radiator... they were never totally dry. Maybe I didn't slice thinly enough?

I won't bother this year though, just stick with my cinnamon sticks.

I make a wreath-ey thing from ivy (from my garden) with a big red ribbon.

I had a big twiggy and berries wreath and one of those suction clear plastic hooks ,but it kept coming off the door.I spent more time picking it up that admiring my festive door. Not good for Christmas spirit Hmm

I haven't seen any decorations I want yet, but Cost-co had some nice glass baubles I might buy.

And the Santa & Snowman mugs from Lakeland.
