Part time work

Just wondering how easy it is to find a part time role? I currently work part time, but was full time at the same company pre kids.. I feel like most part timers I know are in the same position or had a full time role and then reduced hours after having kids. How do you go about finding a new part time role? Can you apply for full time roles and then ask to do part time at interview?

Maybe depends on your industry you work in but I work in the nhs (non clinical- admin) and there are lots of roles advertised part time

I agree it depends on your industry.

In my profession you almost never see part time roles advertised for fee earning staff. However I know that the industry is crying out for good people, recruitment is hard at the moment. I’m pretty sure that for the right person most places would accept part time working.

With the exception of the NHS most people I know in professional roles already worked there full time before going on mat leave and returning part time. Other part time roles advertised are often in lower paying jobs like hospitality, supermarkets, care sector.
If you're in shortage sector it's always worth applying and then if you get an interview you can then say you're looking for part time.

I applied for a full-time role but made it clear to the recruiter that I wanted to do 4 days & if that wouldn’t work, then I understood & appreciated their time.

It’s a hugely male dominated environment where they are looking to build their D&I credentials, so middle management woman returning from mat leave ticked a box for them too!

I have always worked full time but wanted to switch to part time as I wind down to retirement. I only applied for part time roles, there are not as many, but they are there. I did a part time FTC last year and I now have a part time permanent position.

Definitely depends on the industry/role. My industry never advertises part time and most people I know who are part time were pre-existing full time employees. Also part time = 30 hours. I did get mine by applying for a FT post and negotiating to 0.8 at the offer stage but I know I’d struggle to get that elsewhere.

You can apply for full time jobs and then negotiate. I found that around half of recruiters were happy to accept 0.8/ 4 days despite the jobs being advertised as full time.

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help. I was recently covering for some whilst they were on maternity. They will be returning and I am pregnant. However I am not due until late August and do not have a job in the next 4 weeks. Could someone please advise on a part time position, preferable working from home. Thanks

koalabearboombox · 31/10/2024 14:23

@anitak671 I realise your post is from earlier in the year but what did you end up doing for work? I'm in the exact same position...

Bbqnights · 31/10/2024 19:37

I took a full time job and put in a flexible working request to reduce to 0.8 after I'd been there 3 months. In hindsight I'd probably have been fine negotiating at offer stage, but I was in a position where I really needed a job and didn't want to rock the boat until I'd had some time to prove myself.
