I am going to ask for a pay rise despite going on maternity leave next April

Are my employers obliged to ignore the fact that I am going on maternity leave?

And if I write a letter do I put in all the fabbo things that I have done or just ask baldly?

And what if they say, we'll give it to you when you come back from mat leave - is that legal?

OK, only just seen this.

Ummm, is your financial year April-Mar?

If your budget this year was set at a particular salary, it's quite unusual for a charity to give an unscheduled payrise half way through a financial year, not because of half arsed whatever-Hunker-said, but because it looks to the charity commission like giving profits to employees rather than investing in the charity.

What i think you should do, is, based on the success if this year, do a draft budget for next year (you are the director, are you not?) which shows all the increased income projections, AND pay rises for you and the assistant, and get the Board to approve it from the beginning of the financial year, knowing they can afford it. And yes, they are obliged to do it, even if you are on maternity leave.

I honestly think the issue of the unplanned rise half way through a financial year, rather than the maternity leave, might be the problem for the board. It would be if I were chair, anyway, but perhaps that is because I am a half arsed-whatever-hunker-said!

just seen this Enid, cripes what a turn up. What an arse, that god he's gone - a bloody disgrace 'reminding' that you are going to mat leave.

Enid, sounds like you go a good compromise - and the bonus of the dinosaur chairman out of the way and knowledge of new friendly (female) face on the board.

Having begun reading the thread without noticing the date I was going to suggest that your assistant would probably be happy with half waht she asked for (in negotiation, you should always ask for more than you would settle for) - but things have moved on since then.

Hey Enid - you only got half the money, but you did also get rid of the arse that's blocking your payrises - and that's got to be worth something next time you want money.

well done Enid anyway
ime, thats about what you can realistically hope for. they never give 100% of what anyone asks.

Sounds like the chairman was a dinosaur a la my old bully boss

Glad it's kind of resolved. Agree re it being two years without a payrise due to pregnancy. And you're not going on maternity leave for yonks and deserve the rise now.

Make sure the minutes have his comments in them. Arse.

the nice woman was ace

she's new

she took me aside and said 'i fought the womens corner for years and I'm saddened to see that nothing has changed'

I was impressed by use of word 'saddened'

Hi there

Make sure that the minutes of this meeting containg his comments regarding you going on maternity leave.

Then if they refuse you a pay rise ask for their reasons. (-:

Also I would comment that May is 5/6 months away. It's not like you are going off in the next few weeks or months even.

If you go back to this position AFTER any maternity leave would you still not get another pay rise. That sounds to me like 2 years without a payrise due to being pregnant!

Sound like a great case for discrimination to me.

the pathetic thing is that we can afford it!

there was one lovely woman there who said 'I dont think a professional woman should ever have to be in this position. Its degrading. Can't we just give her the money and let her enjoy her maternity leave?'
