Eldur has been doing some amazing work in Iceland. I’ve really enjoyed listening to him when he’s been on podcasts, like The Queen’s Speech.

I'm trying to copy and paste a translated article, but when I paste all I get is this one section. Can anybody help?

The Criminal Justice Committee accepts the opinion of Association 22 - the suppression treatment bill has failed by itself
the ferretJune 8, 2023 3:13 pmAlþingi , Inland , TransmálLeave a comment

Hanna-Katrína Friðriksson's bill regarding changes to the general criminal law, the so-called suppression treatment bill , has fallen on its own after receiving the coup d'état from the Criminal Justice Committee.

On Alþingi's website you can see that yesterday the committee delivered its opinion , but it was extremely doubtful whether the matter would be dealt with before the end of the session.

It is worth noting that the Criminal Justice Committee accepts all the views of the 22 organizations that fought the most against the bill.

The 22 Association, which is a new gay advocacy group, produced a detailed review of the bill, and how the entire bill lacked any definition of what it was intended to prohibit.

The association warned that health workers, workers in the education sector and even parents could be guilty of criminal conduct according to the bill as presented.

In an interview with Fréttina, Eldur Ísidór, who is the chairman of the association, said that he is very relieved: "Yes, this is a great and good victory for us. It caused quite a stir in November when we submitted our review and a lot of hostility towards us from across the queer community. However, we don't let it get to us."

Surprised by the working practices of the parliament and the way of working
"First of all, Hanna-Katrín proposed this bill last year, and we will then, under the auspices of the LGB team, begin to criticize it and point out exactly these things that we and the Criminal Justice Committee have now done. We were not spoken to, and the member of parliament blocks us, and me, and there is no interest in our views. The bill was not passed last spring and was then re-introduced this fall, completely unchanged, which is completely crazy. Then we couldn't sit back and had to do something about it," says Eldur.

Eldur also criticizes that the committee meeting they were invited to was held a day in advance, which is a short time when professionals such as experts in criminal law, health professionals and other stakeholders need to be brought together.

I think the complicity of the media such as RÚV and Vísir is unfortunate
"Yes, it's sometimes painful to sit under the fact that the state media talks about us, even tells lies and then doesn't answer us when we send them comments. We are "the underdog" in this. Its really scary that people drafting legislation have to have this pointed out to them!

That's a huge achievement. Enjoyed listening to him on The Queens Speech a couple of weeks ago. He was helped by Dennis Kavanagh, James Esses and Stella O'Malley.

This seems to be a good achievement, a David and Goliath moment. I'd be interested to know if any of the UK Big Charity sector tried to help on the pro-conversion therapy side? Or are they too busy tweeting vacuous, finger-wagging nonsense and did this pass them by?

Well done Icelandic women ( and their allies ). Let’s hope that the proposed bill in Scotland goes the same way.

TRAs live by blurred definitions and fail by them.

Well done, The 22 Association!

It would be good to have a translated copy of their review in case they thought of something we hadn’t here, or in case they put a view across more persuasively. Even though the wording of their bill would no doubt be particular to them, there must be enough similarities in Iceland mean their review could be pertinent to the next version to go to parliament here.
