James O'Brien 'How not to be Wrong'

Includes a chapter on trans. The very first page includes the assumption that women like us don't want trans-identifying people to have the same rights as every other human.

I certainly believe that trans people should have all the same rights that I do. I don't believe I have rights to enter sports, prisons, toilets etc designated for the opposite sex.

Both JOB and Majid Nawaz have got their faults. However, they are both better than the vile , thick Nick Ferrari who I cannot bear.
Ferrari doesn’t utilise any critical thinking for any subject

He really isn't. He makes me so angry when he says answer my question... answer it and then doesn't listen and then he thinks the Great Barrington is great science. HmmIt's too binary.

@RigaBalsam

See I think that about Majiid. He just comes across as an awful person who is aggressive. Like a Trump supporter. He has done good in bringing the China abuse to public attention but apart from that I think he is vile. I like JOB he isn't perfect but Majiid actually made me want to tweet snd complain. I have never done anything like that in my life. Majiid is awful. Sorry to detail the thread.

Majiid is great - wash your mouth out and get in the naughty corner this instant!

I can't think of many male people (maybe Graham Linehan?) who can see this from a predominantly safeguarding viewpoint. They see it as a right of expression, LGBT rights or a free speech issue

i find the opposite- most of my male friends and family get it immediately- the women not so much.

@PishFood

I’ve listened to him for years, never liked him but I do enjoy his show. I feel the same about a lot of LBC presenters (like Andrew Pierce who did the 10am slot yesterday and today). O’Brien is awful to any callers that he doesn’t agree with, a few years ago he would be nasty but these days he just patronises them and proclaims how he feels sorry for them. I’ve also heard him doing the rounds hawking his book, I thought it sounded really unappealing. Aanother middle aged, privately educated white man that has been in therapy :yawn:

He drives me absolutely bananas!! Much prefer Majid, but usually end up catching JOB. Sooo sanctimonious, insincere and can be quite nasty to callers. No thanks

Majiid is understandably aware of the dangers of group think and cult like behaviour

He's been promoting Trump's Dominion machine conspiracy rubbish so I don't think he's free of cult - like behaviour himself.

This issue does cut across political lines which is one of the difficulties. If people hear "sex is not binary" form people they generally respect they tend to accept it. And if they hear the opposite from those who support mad conspiracy theories they'll be doubtful.

Not sure how we get round this really but on the odd occasions when I've been asked for some good voices on the issue I steer clear of people who have very strange views elsewhere.

I've seen O'Brien do a really thoughtful interview with Rory Stewart: a genuine robust but respectful grappling to find common ground and reach some kind of truth. I found it quite annoying to see what he's capable of when he doesn't treat an interview as a contest for pissing rights.

@coffeeandteav

I love JOB certainly brilliant on the covid and teachers/police/fire fighter issues.

Trans not so sure. I think he would be more flexible in discussing it than people like Majiid, Ian Dale , Nick Ferrari etc and most other right wing presenters.

Majiid has been fantastic on this issue in my opinion. I don't agree with him on everything else (I'm more on the JOB side with lockdown issues), but Majiid did a great call in getting people to reflect upon the lived experience of women as unique when the Jessica Krug controversy emerged. I like how Majiid seems to avoid group-think (he'll say what he believes even if it is unpopular, rather than sign up to a list of prescribed political views).

In J O'B's head there is no such thing as legitimate other points of view, there are only bad people who don't agree with him.

Damian Barr tweeting a horrible transphobic comment was disregarded by TRAs because of who he is. Because he's on the right side, then what he did doesn't count. There are plenty of unpleasant precedents for where that kind of thinking leads.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 26/12/2020 14:35

And that's why the trans stuff is trcky for him:
The agreed 'kind' position is TWAW.
But it makes no sense when challanged...
Never mind, must be kind Sp: 'shut up biogoted unkind people telling the truth and speaking sense.'
It' a tricky position to hold.

Report
BabyItsAWildWorld · 26/12/2020 14:33

J O'B has a very dangerous of brand of 'kindness' which involves him and his ilk deciding what is 'kind' and then attacking, sneering, belittling, name calling dehumanising those who might have a differnt approach to 'kind', or truth or justice, or just a diffrent point of view.

In J O'B's head there is no such thing as legitimate other points of view, there are only bad people who don't agree with him.

And the fact that he doesn't see how dangerous that is makes him, and those who think this way and who push this ideological thinking, very blind and ignorant to the past.

@Biscuitsanddoombar

Somehow I expect all the men wailing “it’s all so difficult” know exactly what a women is when they want a shag

They all turn out to be total transphobes when it comes to answering the question "would you have sex with a 'woman' with a penis?" Or in the case of gay men like Owen Jones 'Would you have sex with a 'man' with a vagina?".

Funny that.

'It's not difficult at all. It's really effing simple'

So true - 'oh it's such a complex issue'. Nope. Biology is plain and simple and very easy to understand

It's not difficult at all. It's really effing simple. Don't let men in women's spaces, even the ones who think they're women. (Especially the ones who think they're women.)

So many men hide behind “it so so difficult”. It’s not really if we just acknowledge biological sex. It’s only difficult because the gender extremists want to make it difficult.

Report
nauticant · 26/12/2020 12:51

I think he's doing a Philip Pullman. He's actually aware there's a conflict, and knows there is a negative impact on women, but is hiding behind "but it's all so diff-ic-ult"
