CiN do fund Mermaids.

As do Big Lottery (as your googling confirmed).

“i can definitely say without mermaids, i wouldn’t be at the stage I am today “ .....

That's a sentence that takes on an entirely different meaning when it's the wrong side of history 🙄

And if you are reading Ethan I am not trying to mock or denigrate your experience, it's just that it sounds very similar to my childhood and that of many others I know who have grown into happy, healthy adults without needing to transition.

Has this link been posted? It's about Ethan, the young person featured in the advert and is the usual kind of back story. Tomboy, internet use, same sex attracted, unhappy at school, parent wanting them to be more girly by wearing dresses, LGBTQ group, Mermaids.

Yes. It really doesn’t look like the action of a responsible charity, above reproach, does it ?
Frankly creepy and disgusting.

That is sick shocksad

It's so, so counter-productive for mermaids. It makes them woefully unprofessional and desperate.

Creepier still, I just went onto youtube to look through some Magdalen videos as I wanted to send a couple to a friend. The opening ad was that mermaids one.

Apparently they're not receiving money from recent grant anymore.

(thanks google)

Was it CiN or comic relief that was funding them?

"I couldn't be mean in school..."

Or are they saying "I couldn't be me in school"?

Oh, maybe! The subtitles were clearly auto-generated, not real ones.

That's just bullying, and it seems pretty damn external to the child. Not an inner essence, not a deeply held self identification. It's the same old listening to other people tell you who you are

But that's the story behind so many trans people. Bullying and abuse when developing self-identify leads to gender dysphoria. Those people need therapy not double mastectomies Sad

Yes, I agree. Bullying and abuse (which are external) aren't revealing something intrinsic and eternal; more often than not, bullying and abuse lead to harmful distortions in young and/or fragile egoes. This dynamic applies to many, many children, and if we try to help them withstand negative thoughts (and prevent them from internalising those negative thoughts), how would we know that it is "obviously different" in a few cases? We don't. Therefore, yes, it makes far better sense, and is far more humane, to work on repelling the negative voices (or even "creating your inner cheerleader") before attempting to question identity.

And the not-so-subtle suggestion of suicidal ideation, in the countdown clock where Ethan decides if Ethan 'wants to continue'.

I missed that on the first viewing but yes, of course Angry FFS.

That ad is unbelievably manipulative.

The kid gets bullied in school, but they change their name, call themselves trans and the bullying stops???

It's the exact opposite of what mermaids tells us actually happens. That trans children are the most marginalised and bullied on the planet.

The kid says my mum says we wouldn't have got to this stage if it hadn't been for mermaids.

The unwitting and constant cock ups channeling their inner Gerald Ratner, is breathtaking.

If Mermaids were genuine about supporting families, they would target the adverts at the parents. Instead they are choosing to target adverts at young kids watching Minecraft films on YouTube (that's the last time my DD watches Minecraft films on YouTube). They are trying to recruit
