The TerFblocker list

Are there any legal people here who could answer a few questions about the legality of this list?

1- The list is held/created by a political party candidate so surely this list must comply with data protection rules given its political in nature?

2- what’s the legality of a political party candidate using such a list to not only silence women but also people in the constituency they plan to run for?

3- data protection has very specific rules on the holding of data especially when that data includes names, locations and sexual orientation. There are many women on that list using real names, their town locations and declaring their sexual orientation primarily leabians. Does this list fall under those rules?

It is created and presumably ‘held’ in the UK given who created it.

4- could the list be considered a form of deformation of character given everyone on it is labelled a ‘terf’?

5 does the list cause any issue with regards to the equality act (I think) given its mostly women and highly sexist?

6 what about safeguarding if there are under 18s on that list? Holding data on children is a different kettle of fish surely?

7- Are there any other issues such a list could cause given its held and used by people in positions of power to primarily silence an oppressed class - women?

8- what rules must political party candidates adhere to when creating lists of this nature?

This list has existed for a while and I can’t find anybody information whether it’s legal, whether there are any conflicts or if the latests GDPR rules apply. Specifically because of who created it and it’s intent.

James Kirkup in today's Spectator on the mass 'terf block' lists:
(extract)
"At around the same time, it emerged that [Caroline] Lucas had been added to Terfblocker, an online widget that allows someone to ensure that they are never exposed to the hateful words of people who fail to follow trans orthodoxy, by automatically blocking them on Twitter. According to Lucas’ own account, Aimee Challoner helped run Terfblocker, helping to ensure the voices of thousands of women (and a few men) are kept quiet online.

At the last count, the list blocks more than 10,000 usernames – mine included – belonging to people who are, by implication, accused of wickedness and cast into the electronic darkness. Now Lucas’ name is there too. So it’s official: Caroline Lucas, Green leader and champion of transgender rights, is a Terf whose words must not be heard. That’ll teach her to watch her mouth, eh lads?" (continues)

We all know none of them could win a debate on this if it's conducted fairly. Hence "you're denying my existence!" #nodebate

The irony here is that if you are promoting a narrative that require the exclusion of over 50k alternative viewpoints, you actually might want to think about why that's necessary.

Think about why your position is such that it can't be debated outside it's own echo chamber.

The more I think about it the TRA twitter tactics and the infiltration of the GP have a lot in common. In terms of the former, use technology to amplify your ideology and silence concerns re: the latter slowly chip away at membership policy protections to deter/prevent questions.

'Terf Blocker is creating subverting terfdom'

"You might have heard of TERFblocker (@terfblocker) lately. Caroline Lucas claims we’re a ‘bot’ (if so, it must be the best AI in the history of ever). Graham Linehan delighted his solicitors with some wild and defamatory claims of his own (his writing has really gone downhill since The IT Crowd). Over and over, certain people are claiming that we at TERFblocker are ‘silencing women’, apparently over 50,000 of them.

This is, of course, nonsense. Here’s what TERFblocker really is:

Thanks to its truly unconscionable moderation policies, which protect bigots and harassers whilst silencing their victims, Twitter can be something of a minefield, as trans people and anyone who supports trans rights certainly know well. You can’t have a proper discussion about trans issues without being targeted for coordinated harassment by bigots who either hide their bigotry behind an acrobatic contortion of feminism, outright fascists, and people who manage to be both. Twitter is one of the leading platforms for online harassment, and that takes some beating.

And that’s where TERFblocker comes in. TERFblocker is trans people and allies working together to do what @jack outright refuses to do: make Twitter a space relatively free of harassment and bullying. Using the Blocktogether app, TERFblocker makes it possible for trans people and their supporters to use Twitter without the constant fear of harassment. We’re currently blocking roughly 8,000 accounts, all of which are known to engage in some flavour or other of bigoted abuse.

In addition, TERFblocker’s Twitter feed helps expose the bigots and their reactionary ideology for what they are.

That’s why the bigots hate us enough to launch highly public smear campaigns – because we make it possible for people to use Twitter without seeing them at all.

We need your help!

Maintaining the blocklist and keeping the feed updated with all the latest receipts on TERFs and other anti-trans bigots is a lot of work that we have taken on on a volunteer basis just to make Twitter a better place to be for trans people and their allies. We've got living expenses and no sources of funding. On top of that, the Twitter-based smear campaign that has now found its way into major media outlets requires us to consider our legal options, an extremely expensive proposition."

So, Harrop started off by humbly offering himself as an advisor to Mayor Anderson in re: #Stickerwoman and general wokeness - and in, what, 2 - 3 weeks, is now feeling emboldened to issue cautions to an elected MP.

Disrespectful?

Ah - silly me. Caroline Lucas is a woman. She's in need of Harrop's advice and re-education to mansplain stuff to her.

So there's Harrop, known harrasser of gender critical women, Terf Blocker, known for lass blocking and reporting of GC women, and LisaQuestions who identified David Challenor's victim

Very interesting tweets from Aimee. Was @BlockTERFs just another blocktogether list or was it something else? Why did it need "trans techies"?

The implication from tweets I've seen is that it was relatively short lived. I'm not sure. Also there seems to be confusion about whether Aimee was trying to do anything else along these lines (DM with Jane Fae)

Eresh Do you know how long /when the 'BlockTERFs' list ran? Was it the first with this focus?

When the 'TERFBlocker' went rogue, Aimee Challenor seemed to be providing key advice.

Report
Ereshkigal · 01/09/2018 10:04

Just for info as it's confusing:

The name of Aimee's blocklist was @BlockTERFs. It was apparently suspended in April this year for Twitter TOS violations. @TERFblocker was originally run by some one else other than the current one (probably a gay man) but he had an argument with Madigan when Madigan said "cis gay men" were transphobic and in the resulting Twitterstorm deleted the account. It was hilarious to witness.

Another person jumped in to create their own @TERFblocker blocklist who I understand is an MTF. This account goes further than just being a blocklist, it actively participates in doxxing women online and organising targeted reporting and other harassment both on Twitter and elsewhere and is best buddies with the likes of Kilgore Sprout. Block them.

Apologies if it’s been mentioned and I am absolutely not an expert in this area but prejudice by algorithm is supposed to be outlawed by GDPR. The examples we went through at work were things like automatic cv filtering, but surely this applies to terfblocker as well?
