Star Trek: Discovery Spoilers!!!

First glimpse of Starfleet officers in the first fifteen minutes are two women, a captain and a first officer. Not only that, but the first thing they talk about is if they are lost or not. Seems a good start so far.

With all the bad news going round, I just wanted to share something good.

Saru has HOOVES. Can you imagine how tiring that must be for the actor, to walk in shoes like that all day?

REALLY?

Oh now I have even more reason to watch The Shape of Water. Grin

I am, I should note, immensely happy to find that there is a Discovery thread here. I haven't loved a Star Trek re-boot this much since Voyager. Roll on season 2!

(Side note: Is there a similar thread about Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries at all? Enquiring minds want to know.... Smile )

Saru is also I think the sea-creature in The Shape of Water. Love him too. Was so upset when Michael had to eat him!

Saru should be captain.

Am very late to the Discovery party!

We really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure at first about the mirror universe episodes, but then got into it. I also liked that we aren't sure of anyone at all by the end - goodies turn bad, annoying people turn admirable, people turn into entirely other people who look exactly like them...

I was sympathetic to Ash/Voq, as whatever he'd done, the Ash side of him was a tortured victim and prisoner of war, but as soon as Ash did the angry "I can't do it without you" speech to Michael, I was done with him. Blech.

Saru. I adore Saru. I am completely weirded out that Michael was coerced into eating Mirror!Saru.

It has been a bit plot-arc-y right from the start - it would be nice to have some "monster of the week" episodes too but I don't know how they'd fit in with the way the series has developed. And that may make the series less long-runnng.

I take your point about Tilly's hair. At least they haven't made her lose loads of weight.

I actually really like the fade from redhead to blonde from the top of her head to the ends.. if there were blue tips then it look like the nose cone of a rocket as it heats up.. would be awesome.. but probably not appropriate for a Captain.

I have so many fond next-gen memories, from when I watched it as a kid, then my youngest and I used to watch it together when he was a toddler (he used to sing the theme tune). They took it from light hearted (like Data's Day) to heavy weight (Tasha, Picard being assimilated), they took the time to let us get to know people etc.

I think that's where they've gone a bit wrong with Enterprise and Discovery - just as I was getting to know and like the Enterprise crew, they went all time-travelly, and they haven't even bothered with Discovery - we're just straight into deep plot before we know almost anything about anyone. Makes me a bit sad.

Perhaps I just like things to go a bit slower than they're prepared to do these days. I should just go back and re-watch the old stuff probably.

Good point about Tilly straightening her hair. Also, she went blonde didn't she?

As to episodes, I agree. Do you remember Data's Day from Next Gen? I loved that one.

I dunno. I think there's some things to be said about Tilly only being taken seriously/finding her feet once she straightened her curly hair I think.

And I'm still not feeling these new klingons - I miss the rowdy ones so much.

And whilst I like the whizzy way the ship translates, I would just like a straightforward plot for once, without time travel, parallel universes, evil twins or all that stuff. What happened to plain space adventures.

Haven't seen the latest but I knew it about Tyler and Voq. Also, of course Giorgiou was the Emperor. Just glad to see Michelle Yeoh back!

I’m here.
I was ready to give up on it as a hate parallel universe stuff but it just got interesting.

Not loving creepy stalking Lorca, that came out wrong in my post above.

I did a search for this thread and didn't realise it was in Feminism chat till after I'd posted, I was expecting it to be in TV (obviously didn't RTFT, sorry). I'm trying to think of some feminist angles to the latest episodes... loving Tilly as the Captain! And the bond between Burnham and Georgiou even across universes. And creepy grooming Lorca! Quite sad about it as I wanted him to be a goody.

I am loving it, to be honest. I like it being a bit darker than usual.

You what?! These last two episodes have made me give up on it entirely.....

I'll stick to re-watching voyager and get my spaceship fix from The Orville, it's just gone all the way up its own arse I think.

Thank goodness you mentioned the creepy mirror, just5more! I thought I was imagining it. Perhaps we were meant to be soooo budy working through the implications of the gay relationship -shoehorned in-- that we only subliminally notice it?

Speaking of shoehorning, there's a LOT of dialogue, not to say an exhausting amount... and I think it's really affecting the acting. Sad I didn't get chemistry from Georgiou and Burnham at first: I got defensiveness, from all that bloody talking!

I like Stamets now that he's on the space mushrooms! Groovy!

Totally agree with both of you about the klingons peas and spaghetti.

It's a real shame what they've done to them.

The captain is supposed to be a wanker isn't he? I assumed we weren't supposed to like him!

sigh. Michael.. not Richard - see, her hairstyle is taking over my brain

Report
SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 19/10/2017 07:37

I'm persisting, although I'm really not feeling the new klingons - slow and spiritual rather than the hot-headed warriors I'm used to.

As to Richard - the thing that I can't unsee is that now her hair's got longer, they're styling it with the side parting and it just reminds me totally of Richard Ayoade when he was in the IT crowd.. I can't find any pictures from the last episode to compare..

I like Richard though - I feel like they're showing her thinking, analysing - I feel like she's written as a character who displays depth - rather than the captain (who I'm not feeling any affection for at all) who's stuck in the dive right in and figure it out later character, with a bit of bitter, wounded hero (refusing to fix his eyes). I do find the alien from a prey race interesting too.

Overall, I think this series has put more dislikable characters into the main crew - they're not all super-sweet and noble - I think that klingons aside, ridiculous secret ship drive plot device aside, the crew is going to be the strong point.

I've been quite enjoying this, loved the creepy thing with the mirror in the last ep I watched.

I don't like that the klingons don't seem very klingon like - not much honour in beating up prisoners and abandoning a fellow klingon to die on an abandoned ship - would challenging him to a fight have been more fitting?

That prob makes me sound like a complete geek but they could have just made a new species and not called them klingons.

But yeah, the more I watch the more I like Michael but I don't like the new captain. The dead one was much better. :( I like Michaels room mate and the fact that they have a gay relationship on the show though. When he called him "dear doctor" that was so cute! Really reminded me of Garak and Dr Bashir from DS9.

why is she called michael?

I really shouldn't be on this thread as I've only just found this series even exists... but anyone of the era to have watched TOS as a kid will know that the mother in the Waltons was played by a Michael Learned, so I guess its a unisex name in the US. (That used to bug me at the time Grin)

I've watched half of Enterprise and tbh I rate that way higher than Discovery.

And I ageee about it not being child friendly! I remember watching Voyager with my Dad, and DP remembers watching it with his, it was a great show for family bonding. I’m not sure many parents will be so keen to share this one with their kids given the violence and now the swearing.

On the plus side, I love that they finally have a gay couple, though it’s sadly brought out all the homophobes on my Facebook.
