Anyone interested in writing for an online magazine for pre-teen girls that does not feature makeup, boys, horses, cute animals, pink or glitter?

Before anyone reports me to MNHQ, this is a voluntary, non-profit making blog that I am thinking about creating.

I am sick fed up of looking for interesting magazines for my 9 year old daughter that does not feature the above. Most of the comics/magazines are so boring that she flicks through them then discards.

Who decided that all pre-teen girls are only interested in stuff like that? I think that they might be persuaded to read a bi-weekly online magazine with other topics.

My daughter loves art, for example. I could see her loving a magazine that featured stories of artists, or history of art. Maybe your dd likes to read about astronomy, science, geography, or maybe you work in that field and would like to write an article explaining what you do.

We could have articles about technology, about politics (in a general way, explaining about the upcoming US election, and how they vote), about countries, people and how they live.

I would set up the blog and anyone could submit articles for publication. I would be looking to have two articles a week on set days.

Anyone interested?

That would be great.

soooooooooooooo

Here it is.

It will be officially launched tomorrow but you lot are getting a sneak preview (and I am hoping you will find any typos or mistakes that I might have made).

Jump!

If anyone can help me add a tagline and get rid of the search box at the top of the logo, I would be grateful.

Will we have any idea of viewing figures by the end of the day?

We went over 2000 page views earlier today. Slowing down now as the first wave have seen mag already.

Now we have to build on that.

Just 5 page views away from 2500

And I have had a few new articles so will have something to post in the next few days. Tomorrow I have a lovely article about hedgehogs and the hosepipe ban.

I will post new content Mon Wed Fri so will need more articles end of next week, if anyone has anything.

Anyone able to do something in the science line? Or engineering?

oh well done mmeL - you are an impressive woman! i'm the birther of good ideas that never make it past the inspiration stage i'm afraid so a great admirer of people who actually DO things.

i was about to say i'd like to contribute but given what i just confessed about myself perhaps i should bear that in mind and be realistic Hmm

i have however just bought several preteen/early teen novels to pass for birthday gifts for my niece and nephews all chosen with care as to the messages in them particularly gender wise. their birthday is not till august so i shall try and read them and could possibly write reviews if they are suitable. they maybe a little old if you are aiming at 9yos.

Well done! Looks good.

DD is a fantastic writer but although she has minimal interest in fashion and make-up she does rather major on animals Hmm Particularly horses.... Sorry Grin

Thanks all.

If the books are aimed at pre-teen then reviews always welcome, SAF. Target group is 9 - 13(ish) but a few readers have told me that their teenage DD has enjoyed reading it. And some 12/13 yo are reading more advanced books.

Orm
Will you ever forgive me for the horses? If your DD would like to write something about horses, I would gladly publish it. I would love more contributions from pre-teens and teens.

I have a few science-y type people willing to write an article, which is fantastic.

Today's article was slightly less serious - Vintage Clothes - and how girls can adapt old clothes. Been trying to think of the craft blog that would tie in well with it. She is a MNetter, but I cannot remember the name of the blog.

I thought I would just post this update here for all those who helped launch Jump! Mag to see how far we've come, and to thank all those who were so enthusiastic and supportive.

We have posted over 200 articles, almost a third of them written by preteens and teens. From being a part-time hobby, it has taken over my life and is a full time job. I am developing it further at the moment, and will soon be able to pay for contributors.

If you were one of the early contributors, do get in touch. I would like to offer free subscription for a year as a thank you.

My 12yo has been a regular reader and she contributes, I think. She's enjoyed it a lot. She's not one for fluffy girly pre-teen stuff and she's enjoyed the features on politics and feminism.

Marking place as I remember you launching this :) It looks brilliant now! I wish I had something to contribute but I can't think of anything!

Just to say, I'm having issues with the drop down menus, they disappear before I can click on the sub-heading.

Glad your DD likes it. If she has contributed, would you get in touch cause I'd like to offer free subscriptions to those who did so (assuming we get funded!)

Confused
I know, the drop down menus have cost me hours of frustration. They won't appear on the new site, as we've decided to make the website flow. The idea is that without menus, kids will perhaps read an article that is not in their normal interests/comfort zone.

I am at the absolute end of my technical capabilities, I will admit that. That will be passed on to someone who knows how to do stuff like this.

First time I have seen this. Just sent a link to my 11 yo daughter. She hates one direction, can't see the point of makeup, but loves high heels...she is also clever, beyond her years and sick of having to fit in. Finally a place she can be herself..

I am a writer - are you still looking for contributors?

Hurrah. My DD hates 1D too.

We have left the girls to talk about their likes and dislikes. If someone wants to write an article about liking make up and/or high heels, we'd love to publish it. We want to show the diversity of being a preteen, and that you can do and be what you want to be.

Yes, still looking for writers, and if we get funding then we will finally be able to pay. Ideally, I would like to have writers who would commit to a series of articles on a particular topic. If you are interested, email me editor @ jumpmag. co. uk

Equality and diversity section?

That's my favorite teaching subject and there is always a day, week or month to celebrate/commemorate things. Off the top of my head mental health awareness, Breast Cancer awareness, Ada Lovelace day and Diwali are all about now or in the next couple of weeks.

Of course If I had my way it would all be special editions so October would have 'how to tie a sari', traditional Diwali snacks recipes, interviews with young carers of parents with mental health problems along with advice and helplines, spells for Halloween, who Ada Lovelace was and her influence with a link to an article on how to write a program in python (or other free to download language) what it will feel like when your breasts start to develop and how to check them every month. Maybe some sort of historical article on witchcraft (It drives me mad when people think witches were burnt at the stake, in England they never were) and also that a conviction for witchcraft was secured in the 1940s.

What about things like what to look out for when picking a secondary school - a parents and child guide could be useful.

At 9 I was quite into electronics, I had my room set up with a warning if there was someone on the stairs.

book reviews.

please do it.

Count me in, Ive done some freelance stuff already.
It would be good for people to write about different jobs they've done to give the girls done insight when choosing a future career goal.
