Anyone watching Panorama?

It's nearly finished and I'm a bit disappointed with this programme. It's a big subject to try and cover in half an hour.

Anyone else watching?

David you're missing the point here - this has not been whipped up by the press, it has grown organically from many many individual parents who have linked up via the internet.

The word panic implies that objectors are at sixes and sevens, don't know what to do, knee-jerk reactions etc. We know this is happening and we know what needs to happen to rectify it. This isn't something that has just happened over night so no knee-jerk. It has got significantly worse over the last 20 years but at a low level it has always been around (they were talking about it when I was a teenager in the 80's).

I feel that the issue of the sexualisation of children and basically the objectification of women (which is definitely tied in and which the programme glossed over) is getting so bad that it is reaching a tipping point which is being borne out by campaigns by Mumsnet amongst others. The fact is that this should have happened many years ago but people have ignored it/felt it doesn't affect them. Now it is getting so obvious it can't be ignored.

"Moral panic" is a phrase that to me is tripped out by people who have a vested interest in keeping the status quo and quelling those who object.

I thought it was poor and shallow.

The editing annoyed me - as Jess says, the images kept flashing up but it was almost like wallpaper - there was no analysis

I thought it was stoopid her asking the 13yo girl and the 14yo boy if they thought it was a problem - I mean sure, ask them what they think, but I hated the way it was forced into a 30-minute narrative - and at the end everything was all right. I thought the Brookes guy was OK until he came out with the line that porn wasn't real and teenagers get that - well that's ok then (is it?)

I agree with Jess - I think the issue is massively underestimated and using the term 'moral panic' is pointless here.

(It's a different thread, but I think TV these days is a hopeless medium for current affairs or investigative stuff. I hardly ever see anything I rate. It all looks like Brass Eye to me but it's supposed to be serious.)

I don't understand why the words 'moral panic' get wheeled out with this issue. I think, if anything, the problem is hugely underestimated. For example, I found it amazing that because the teenage boys who watch porn said it didn't affect them that their parents and others involved in the programme were satisfied.

The most recent government report on this, published last February, was watered down because its findings were deemed to be too bad. Now we have another review. It's time to stop reviewing and start taking action.

As for moral panic, I don't think they're helpful words to use.

I thought it was a good programme though obviously it needed to be longer to cover all the issues properly.

There is an element of moral panic around 'sexualisation' and Mumsnet may be part of that. Remember the Press will always highlight spectacular cases regardless of how representative they are. It sells papers and also feeds into their right wing view that society is going to the dogs.

For me the main idea to come out of the programme was that if you're worried about what your children are doing or wearing etc you should try to understand their point of view first, rather than immediately calling the police or demanding government action.

I was incredibly disappointed in how shallow it all was really. The sex health expert guy who said porn wasn't real and teens should be made aware of that. Very confusing.

I was quite looking forward to it and thought finally people are taking this seriously and I was so disappointed.
It felt like they weren't really taking the issue seriously and rushed through it without looking at things properly.

Also loving having you all on FB Grinand I am learning alot from you all

Tbh, I wouldn't bother watching it. It featured a few teenagers and then came to the conclusion that everything is fine and dandy.
