Really? I loved it!

MrsCampbellBlack · 12/09/2016 20:14

No Stratters - it was diabolical! You are so far the only person I know who enjoyed it.

Report
StStrattersOfMN · 12/09/2016 20:12

I've finished it.

I loved it, I've not enjoyed the latest Rutshire novels, but Mount is pure Jilly again. Right up there with the first ones imo.

I don't think I'll bother, which makes me sad.

Ok - off to find it

There s a spoiler thread as well merry. I'm sure they'll tell you. Not got that far myself yet.

If spoilers are allowed on this thread, JC said in a Guardian interview that Rupert has an unexpected plot line that is very shocking - please, please, please tell me what it is! (Or any kind of hint!)

I've said before that I think she is one of our greatest descriptive writers when writing about gardens or nature and The Common Years is one of my favourite ever years but I'm not getting this one so far.

I think it's awful so far. You don't expect political correctness from Jilly but this is dreadful.

Quite enjoying it, but I'm sure the ages are all messed up, Rupert has to be more than 57.

That makes Taggie about 38, but she was 19 in the mid eighties... and it's clearly set in 'now' with iphones and twitter.

Also agog about an old man shoving his penis in the mouths of unwilling old ladies, and that's...funny?

There are repeated sentences - long ones - everywhere. The editors must have given up.

Report
LanaorAna1 · 10/09/2016 12:03

Oh DEAR. I'm scanning my way through the endless chapters on the intricacies of a local horse race in the hope of finding a few words on humans, preferably one I know, or a crumb or two of humour or raunch.

Boy, am I flicking quickly. This is a ramshackle manual on flat racing, not a Jilly Cooper.

Should we have a separate thread for those who have finished the book?

Report
MrsCampbellBlack · 09/09/2016 16:18

I actually am quite cross at jilly.

Report
TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 09/09/2016 15:49

Okay, SPOILERS! Read on at your peril!

Somewhat pissed off that Taggie's boobs are described as famously beautiful, unspoiled by feeding children. Um, fuck off, Jilly!

Why is Taggie so stressed? Can't she just hire more carers/get someone to do the ironing/write Christmas cards? It just rings a bit false that Gala has to help out with it all. Also, Taggie hasn't done or said anything of substance yet and I'm 47% through. I want her to develop opinions on something that isn't just hating Helen. Why does Declan have to stop Patrick, Caitlin and Maud tapping her for money - I want Taggie to learn how to stand up for herself!

I can't stand Etta either, or Dora.

Report
TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 09/09/2016 15:02

I am quite enjoying it too, with exception of the bits about Etta, who is a total drip.

Yes, can we discuss spoilers yet?

Report
venusinscorpio · 09/09/2016 14:09

Ooh am off on holiday next week, will have to get this!
