I like a good thriller/something a bit dark. Recently finished The Girl on the Train and loved it. Any suggestions?

I have another of his books - Juliet Naked, Diamondand will give that a go. Am always prepared to give an author a second chance before deciding they're not for me

I have got Starter For Ten by David Nicholls as well. He writes well, but I just found myself not caring about the characters in One Day.

Duchess that's interesting. Wonder if you would like his other books. I like his other novels but not so much his more rambling books.
I liked Starter for Ten and One Day so I'm looking forward to Us.

Yes - Us looks good. I really enjoy David Nicholls' books, I highly recommend Starter for Ten, it was much better than the film version.

I think I'm going to order A Man Called Ove now!

Really enjoyed Us. Much better than One Day, which I didn't particularly like.

I read Funny Girl a few weeks ago. It was the first Nick Hornby novel I've read. Didn't like it at all. I thought the story weak, thin and disappointing.

For my weekend holiday break thing I am going to read the new Louis de Bernieres that I have pre-ordered for 2 July in hardback.

For our family holiday which will mostly be lazing around I am going to read Natasha's Dance by Orlando Figes and take my Kindle as back up.

Ops my list for summer read just grew by several items from reading this thread. This summer I am mainly looking forward to The Song Collector from Natasha Solomons. It's released in a few weeks. I love her books.

For those of you who loved A Man Called Ove, I can highly recommend Fredriks Backman new title just released in English called My Grandmother sends her regards and apologises. I cannot say how much I love this book. I will review it properly on the 50 books challenge shortly.

I was supposed to be saving a Man called Ove for holidays but didn't manage it. So wonderful, had me blubbing.

I must now resist the following until the end of July, which are sitting on my coffee table, taunting me:

If you'd like to try something completely different, how about Stuff Matters by Mark Miodownik, which tells you all sorts of interesting things about 'stuff' in a very entertaining way. Not what I normally read but I really enjoyed it. Part of the joy of being in a book group and reading other people's choices.

I think the lady who wrote the Guernsey Potato Pie book died and the book was finished by the co-author. I liked David Nicholls' Us and Emma Healey's Elizabeth is Missing recently.

The Paying Guests is the very definition of a page-turner. I remember my heart beating faster when I was reading certain passages.

Have just been to Waterstones, and of course, got sucked into one of their deals! Bought the Paying Guest and The Broken by Tamar Cohen. Ended up buying books for dc too. Got my ds Moone Boy and dd Rooftoppers. It has been an expensive morning!

Another one with Kate Atkinson's A God in ruins on my list. Read Life after Life over Christmas and couldn't put it down.
Also hoping to get through these this summer:
Richard Flanagan - the narrow road to the deep North;
Carys Bray - a song for issey bradley;
Michael cooper: mini and me;
Winston Graham: Ross poldark and demelza

Debating whether to have another stab at the luminaries by Eleanor Catton. Tried when it first came out and couldn't get into it at all but a couple of friend love it and are urging me to persevere! Any thoughts?

Duchess I loved Fingersmith (great plot) and Tipping the Velvet but didn't do so well with The Little Stranger, which put me of Sarah Waters for a while. I have just read an excellent review of The Paying Guest so I'm feeling interested again.

A Man Called Ove is wonderful. Better than The Rosie Project imo It made me laugh and cry in equal measure. It was a joy to read. One of my favourites from last year.

The Paying Guests was a good story too. Perhaps a little bit over long but I enjoyed all the twists and turns and the historical detail from the twenties. I've got Fingersmith lined up to read soon and The Night Watch.

I absolutely love Kate Atkinson - her sense of humour and the shrewd wisdom in her books - I'm such a big fan. I have just finished the Jackson Brodie series so I will definitely add Life After Life and A God in Ruins.

The Paying Guests is now out in paperback. It's one of my favourite books of the past few years and one I wish I could read again for the first time.

I am torn between big fat hardbacks which I'd read at home - The Paying Guests, The BuriedGiant - and downloading things into my iPad kindle app (which I disapprove of on principle) which means I can take more books without overloading my suitcase. A moral dilemma.

If you like The Rosie Project you might like A Man Called Ove which is about human relationships but really surprising and lovely.

A God in Ruins is superb. I read it a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Think it's even better than Life After Life.
