Random binge - hate and don't understand myself

Yesterday I ate well and lightly. No snacks. Three appropriate meals. Then mid evening I saw a jar of Lotus spread at the back of the cupboard.
The awful thing is I knew what was going to happen and nothing I could tell myself stopped me.. I took a small teaspoon, sat myself down in front of some great tv, and over the course of an hour, tiny scrape by tiny scrape, ate 3/4 of it.
I'm disgusted with myself. There was absolutely no need. Wtf. And I've done it before. Wtaf.
Any suggestions?

This is my take ...

So ... you're on a diet. You're eating less, even if its more healthy.

I think what happens is that - physically, psyhologically - your body says well I haven't eaten fully yet ie. what I normally eat, so hey, lets have some more food. If you spy something in the back of the cupboard, its all too easy to have it.

So. it requires a certain different kind of approach. I try lower calories one day (say 600-800) with more the next day (say 1000 - 1600 depending), I think of it as Flexible Restraint. It has the benefit of lowering your usual needs and gradually lowers them over time. But without restricting it so much every day that you feel deprived.

Thats my theory, or one of them, why people go "off piste".

Flexible restraint works better to my mind - because restraint is the name of the game - but not the strictness that creates deprivation and rebellion.

It is annoying, all these things, but you're on the path and its all a learning curve still, changing habits takes a while, so be gentle with yourself.

Without coming across judgy why was it in the cupboard to start with? If you live alone then you need a cupboard purge, if you have a family etc then I understand it is tricky. You can’t rewind what happened so draw a line under it and throw away anything else lurking at the back of cupboards that could tempt you in the future.

That Lotus spread is like heroin, when it first came out my partner bought it, after one session with it we threw it out, nothing good comes out of eating that stuff!

Start again, it’s not the end of the world.

I wouldn't call that a binge!

I've never heard of Lotus Spread but I would suggest that your user name has something to do it; wheat is addictive (there's a good book that explains it better than me called Wheat Belly by William Davis MD) wheat makes your blood sugar level rocket and so does sugar , does your spread have sugar in it? so that's your reason!
