I'm after people's honest opinions of themed weddings. Have you been to any that were great/awful?

I want my wedding to be themed. Subtley, not OTT. Like you would have to be looking carefully to spot it. Thoughts?

I love the idea of a theme and if you want to you absolutely should. All weddings have a theme of some sort even if it's just colours I went to a lovely one with a seaside theme.

Its your day, and if you and OH want to enjoy your day together in the way you want to then why not

Who cares if people think its naff - they do their day how they want to (or can afford)

I personally had a quietish day, bbq in the in-laws garden after - I dont like big blingy weddings, but thats their day, not mine!

I don't get themed weddings - as others have said surely the theme is "wedding"? I mean, I get having a season appropriate theme in terms of colours, food, and flowers but beyond that, I think it's a bit odd.

But it's your day so do what you want.

We didn't have a theme as such but we had things there to reflect our personalities/interests. DH had the tables named of his favourite football players, we had favours and wine from Italy and Italian classical music in the background (my DF was Italian). I organised a wedding card from his favourite football team and a shirt signed by the players (it's a lower league team he follows so not too tricky to be honest). I put a chilli in his buttonhole as a surprise. He is chilli mad and spotted it straight away.

Maybe it was naff. To be honest, I wouldn't really care. It was our day and it was all about us and our future together.

Do what you like OP and enjoy it. If there's any guests who are grumpy about it, they're not going to tell you! Do what makes you and your future DH happy.

OP has said a couple of times that she doesn't want the guests to dress up and is thinking more about decorative pieces.

My initial reaction is - NO. But that's my preference I hate themed anything. I just hunk it seems forced and I associate it with naffness and having to wear awful crap clothes you never normally would. A very subtle theme, eg. Italian/ French with cuisine and music from a county would be nice, but no tacky clothing and no forcing guests to wear accessories or anything.

I get that it's not to everyone's tastes but I feel that as long as the guests are not required to put in any effort towards the theme, then why would they have an issue?

I had sea shells scattered on the tables & my wedding cake had shells on it but that was as far as the theme went. I've been to a Disney themed wedding (bride & groom in full costume) and have seen two Lord of the Rings themed weddings (not so original after all Grin).

I enjoy a subtle theme, adds a bit of fun to the day and tends to incorporate the couples personalities to the festivities.

One couple I know did a lot of travelling so that was a theme of the wedding. A vintage suitcase for the wedding cards, the tables were named after countries they had been to, the place cards were like luggage labels.
I love stuff like that, little touches that tie the theme together.

But why? I happen to like giraffes.
I can't imagine if I was organising my wedding today; deciding to put little giraffes all over the tables, so all the guests can say"ah, look at all the little giraffes, that'll be because Flgging likes them"...
And then what? It's ridiculously wanky and nobody really gives a shit anyway, why should they?

The sweets wouldn't be instead of actual food. The theme is something we both like a lot and would be for us more than the guests. I would make a lot of the things myself to be honest.

I reckon it's Harry Potter and Bertie Botts every flavour beans.

Or...

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Or...

Alice in Wonderland, 'eat me' labels on the sweets.

What is your theme, then?

Why do you need a theme? Theming has only become a thing since weddings became really commercialised - it's just a way of getting you to part with more money. Every wedding is unique because of the people getting married.

Themes are generally meh IMO. If it's that subtle why do it at all? Is it just a test to see which of your relatives and friends can work it out? Does it have a special significance to you and your OH? As a guest the most memorable parts of a wedding are whether the B&G were happy and whether the food and company were good. All the other elements of a wedding such as flowers, photography, decor, themes, favours, dresses, photobooths etc are generally forgettable unless they're memorable for the wrong reasons.

Sweets are a lot of people's idea of hell. Seems to be a new trend taking over, too, pushing sweets on guests instead of more real food.

Most people have some sort of theme, even if it's only "red roses" or "silver and lilac colours"

Flogging, that would make more sense if you knew my theme. Grin

Naff if you expect guests to dress up to suit it.

I'm not letting it take over. The main purpose of my wedding is to marry my amazing DP but I have seen some things I like that are based on the theme and thought it would be nice. I was thinking table names and bowls of themed sweets on the tables. Invitations and save the dates... Etc.

Does depend on what you are thinking of
Years ago dh went to one (I was invited, but declined as it was on my due date....) which was a big themed thing. She spent SO much time sorting all the detail, but forgot about the relationship, and they split up after less than a year, despite having lived together for years beforehand - it just became the focus of her life.
I went to one recently though, where the cake, and the table 'names' were all themed around a hobby they both spent time on together - everyone thought it was a lovely personal touch.
I have been to a couple where it had to be pointed out to me - so then it seemed like a lot of effort, which guests didn't actually even notice.

so, I guess it depends.

Why does a wedding need a theme? It's a wedding; that's the theme...
Theming it around your favourite book is bizarre.
