Hurricane season discussion

Rather late to the discussion, as we've reached L already with Hurricane Lee. It's been an active season so far. Unsurprisingly with the atlantic sea temperatures.

Hurricane Lee intensified from Cat 1 yesterday, to Cat 5 today. Astonishing intensification. A couple of models show it potentially strengthening further. If it does so, it would become one of the strongest atlantic basin hurricanes ever recorded.

Thankfully it is projected to stay out at sea currently, heading northwestwards and north of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. After that it looks to slow down and ???

A quite remarkable discussion from NOAA here. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCDAT3+shtml/080252.shtml?

First time on record that every tropical ocean basin has had a category 5 storm in the same year according to the Washington Post.

I'm in New York and hoping it stays away from us. Our last direct hit was Sandy, and that was very bad. Trees were down everywhere, and the power was out for a week.

It’s been quite a season so far, will Lee definately stay out to sea?

That can't be known for certain yet, but it does look very likely that it will stay out at sea.

I’m seeing various suggestions that it may make landfall in Canada on Twitter, but will be weaker by then. It just depends on when it makes its northwards turn.

Worth keeping an eye on Margot coming up behind it too?

That will be a relief for Florida if it does.

What happened with A to K ?

A-K mostly stayed as tropical storms.

Franklin did some damage in Dominican Republic. Idalia hit Florida and bits of Georgia and did quite a bit of damage.

Don I think also reached hurricane strength but might have been out at sea when it did.

Christ almighty. Just seeing the first pictures coming in from Acapulco.

The storm intensified so quickly there was no time for an evacuation for many people and people had to just find shelter.

Some hotels were telling guests to shelter in basements - keep in mind that the area isn't used to Hurricanes, never mind a Cat 5. I would NOT be sheltering in a basement in a coastal area.

Reports are that the military are being sent now. Communication has been lost with some areas completely.

Its BAD.

Otis is horrendous. None of the computer models that I can see showed the potential for this. People would have expected a typical UK type stormy day, then with no notice got hit with 165mph. It's beyond words.

Just seen it on Sky news. It looks horrific.

I'm stunned. Today is a 'big news' day with the shooting in Maine and the war in Gaza BUT there is not a sausage about Otis on the BBC front page. At all.

You have to hunt on the site to find anything about it.

Its ONLY unprecidented for a city of a million to get a direct hit of a cat5. From the pacific. And to develop so quickly.

Most other days of the year it'd be the headline of the day.

27 reported dead so far. But they haven't even been able to contact a lot of areas yet.

Thread with lots of pictures throughout Acapulco (not just the big hotels) showing the extent of the devastion. (Hopefully this will link to the photos on the thread rather than the first few posts of text. If not keep scrolling down until you reach the photos.)

The text is in Spanish which reads as follows:

In Acapulco everything is uglier than it looks. The videos from the coast where windowless and destroyed hotels appear fall short of the periphery.

It is true that there were a lot of rats and they have already stolen everything from the stores, but those who have not left their homes do not have water and do not have food.

Most of the houses that are in the upper area were left without glass, in the lower area they were flooded up to the waist, now only mud remains. Almost all the tin roofs were also blown off.

The shelters are overwhelmed, there is no response from the federal or state governments, much less from Aunt Abelina. The main antennas fell down, just two hours ago the Telcel signal was restored, the Telmex numbers are already giving tone.

I'm going to put pictures of how little they have uploaded in the groups. Exclusively with the desire that they see that in the little town there are not only hotels.

I can't believe how little coverage this is getting in the media generally. This is the first cat 5 to hit a large city. Its going to get a lot lot worse. Looting already was happening (argument was that the rats were already getting the food and since there was still no federal help, people might as well under the circumstances)

I do think its only a matter of time before we get another cat 5 direct hit on other cities and this is just a warning for whats to come. The lack of warning is the scariest bit for this one.

Thank you for holding the fort in here Red. You are absolutely right that it is shocking that more attention has not been paid to the devastation in Acapulco.

The pictures and videos I’ve seen look horrific. Whole buildings ripped apart.

So many livelihoods destroyed too.

Any ideas about where to donate to? Other than UNICEF I can’t really see anywhere with a specific appeal for providing aid.
