Lactose free milk that tastes closest to normal formula

Hiya!

Our 11 month old is being investigated for a potential (hopefully temporary) intolerance to dairy after a stomach bug.

I was in the middle of weaning her off BM and was using normal formula and it was going fairly well. We were given some dairy free formula for her but she won’t touch it, and I don’t blame her - it tastes awful!!

Im giving up dairy too so that I can still BF as it looks like we might end up having to go back to that if she keeps refusing formula. Annoying as Ove already started drying up and she starts nursery in a months time.

Shes just turned 11 months and I was wondering if it was worth trying the fortified plant based milks alongside breast milk. I’ve tried her on Alpro oat milk for 1-3 year olds with mix results.

Does anyone have any recommendations on either how to get her to drink the dairy free formula or alternatives that might taste closer to BM or normal formula? (I know you’re meant to wait until they’re one to go to non-formula and I won’t jump into this and waiting for an appointment with HV).

Afyer only 36 hours of us both being dairy free we’re already seeing an improvement so I’m hoping to at means it is just a temporary and mild reaction. Here symptoms were only diarrhoea but it’s gone on for a month now and she was starting to lose weight 😭

Your breastmilk is full of lactose so I'm not sure why you'd give up dairy too.

Lactose free is not the same as dairy free. Lactose is the sugar in all animal/human milks and then you get issues with the milk proteins which is where you'd give dairy free milk.

Lactose intolerance tends to be temporary after a stomach bug. You get lactose free formula that isn't dairy free and you get dairy free milks which it sounds like you've been prescribed. What milk did they give you?

Hiya! The doctor told me to give up dairy too incase it helps, the formula we’ve been given is Aptamil Pepti 2 (for the dietary management of cows milk allergy)

That milk contains lactose.
Reducing your lactose consumption will not affect the lactose in your milk.
It seems you've cut out cows milk protein rather than lactose.

I have Asdas own brand of lactose free milk. The price is reasonable and I can’t taste the difference on cereals etc.

we had CMPA I had to give up all dairy as going through the breast milk, as baby got older we switched to NUTRIMIGEN with no issues and added a little coconut water to sweeten x

As others have said BM is very very high in lactose naturally. You can’t cut it out. A baby who is lactose intolerant won’t thrive on BM. However cmpa so a cows milk allergy is common and you can take that from your diet to make your milk safe. Which it seems like you have done. If she’s improved it’s the protein that’s upsetting her not the lactose. Keep with BM and use oat milk in food etc.

GPs generally are not clued up on allergies. Do your own research.

coming from a parent who’s child has a milk soya and egg allergy that with cutting that from my diet I was able to continue to breast feed.
