Do you believe in mediums?

I won a free reading on a raffle.
It was spot on. She had my cousin who died in 2020s name, how long ago it was, her mums name, the name of the girl who gave her CPR. The fact I still can't cook, that I have a memory box of photos under my bed.
How do they do it?

If you won it in a raffle, did you have to book and give your full name when doing so, or did the instantly do the reading at the end of the raffle?

I’m assuming it’s not the latter.

There are loads of things you can find out just from someone’s name.

Theres an account on TT where people do a ‘go on, find out who I am’ when all they have is a random user name and a very non identifying random profile pic. The person manages it without even having their name, she turns up the area they live in, their relatives, family photos (identity blanked out of course) and then -the icing on the cake- the house listing photos from when they purchased their house. It’s very unnerving!

No, I don’t believe in mediums.

You wrote your name and address on the raffle ticket I assume? Then they could have found stuff out about your cousin beforehand. Was it in the local paper? Other stuff: lucky guesses or maybe they are just good judges of character. You look like the sort of person who keeps photos and can't cook. What about the things they said that weren't accurate. How many of those were there?

They use google, guesswork and common sense.

I saw a medium years ago. She was scarily accurate. And not about anything that could have been looked up.

It actually unnerved me a bit as there really was no way she could have known some of the things. Names of random people in my life, how I felt about seeing my gran in the chapel of rest (it was a ridiculous thing to focus on and not at all usual), ex boyfriend from 15 years ago etc.

I honestly don't know how they do it. I was quite sceptical until then.

I saw one in 1989 so pre social media, when i was living the other side of the world, went alone, it was so incredibly accurate it left me in no doubt that some are genuine.....a lot aren’t mind but some are.

I think mediums are like Sherlock Holmes - it looks impressive and impossible until you hear the explanation of how they did it, and then you realize it's actually quite mundane.

If mediums were real we would know. Faith or belief wouldn't factor into it. You wouldn't think to ask someone if they believe in gravity, would you ?

People keep believing in mediums because it's fun and mysterious. Not because there's any truth to it.

I believe that some have a gift but just a tiny minority.
I saw one in the 80's obviously no social media then , she was elderly and lived quite a distance away from me , i went to her home , i knew not to give anything away and other than a greeting when we met i said nothing , she was very special and told me things that only i knew and things to come in my future life that i had no control over but have happened ,everything she told me was specific.
I am very cynical about the majority of so called mediums though and i'll probably never have the same experience again.

Yes I believe some are. Like others, met one and was scarily accurate but with very random things she couldn’t have known about. She later gave me some excellent advice when we moved into an extremely old property that was definitely haunted ( never believed in that either before I lived there).

I don't see the point in the ones that just tell you a load of facts you already know.... like your cousin's name and the year they died and their favourite things etc. I mean how does that help?

I don't know why so many unbelievers respond on this topic.
To answer your question, I don't know how "they" do this.
I only know that I have been a member of a psychic development circle and I have been able to "see" information about the person sitting in front of me. Is this psychic ability or messages from beyond the grave, I'm not sure. But when you tap into something and "see" stuff about passed members of their family, there is no explanation except being fed info from someone/ somewhere else (unseen - ghost/spirit/guardian angel/ residual energy/ psychic memory - I honestly don't know)
The not knowing where the info is coming from is what scares me and I have stepped away from doing it until I am comfort that I'm not dabbling in something nasty.
I'm a Christian. I am not a fraud. I am a believer as I have been able to do it myself. But clueless to why and how.

I have been in a psychic circle too. It’s a training. You develop your skills and senses and fine tune them. The people I was with were not frauds. I would never touch an ouija board or anything like that. That’s inviting in unpleasant entities. Part of training is knowing how to protect yourself and keep clear

I have had a lot of readings but most weren’t great . At psychic fairs etc. Some are very good and some are not, and that has to do with the persons energy who is being read for sometimes too.

When I have read people, it's genuine, without doing research before hand etc 😉,
and I do so with good intentions.
It's fascinating, but very weird as a beginner. I believe we can all do it if we want to

Some.

I've been to some evenings with a bloke called Steven Holbrook and there's no way he could know or guess some of the stuff he says. He doesn't know who is attending beforehand and some are very subtle, not stuff that you'd be able to google like someone suggested above.

@scryingeyes , what did the psychic development involve, I would be interested to know? I’m not sure if I believe what mediums do is anything more than research and guess work, but have also thought that if it is more than that, I would wonder who or what the source of that information was and if it was something sinister.

I'm not completely in the "all bollocks" mindset about it

I believe that humans are very intuitive- I mean you can walk into a room with all backs turned and silent and immediately pick up if there's tension in the room

But there's also Barnum statements and cold reading

Report
evemillbank · 07/03/2023 21:51

Well I believe they are cold reading con artists.

I've been to some really bad ones. I went to one pre internet. Booked by a relative. She was spot on. I'm still sceptical but massively impressed by her.

Catspyjamas17 · 12/03/2023 06:18

No. But I believe some mediums genuinely believe in their ability to receive messages from spirit, when I actually believe it's just heightened empathy, observation and intuition skills.

I went to one with work it was 40 miles from home and booked as a group with no names

there was no great predictions but really unsettled me how accurate she was about family stuff
it was very random stuff about family that she was spot on with
