Well this is a jolly Christmas story:

www.tes.com/news/school-news/breaking-news/one-five-teachers-denied-cost-living-pay-rise

From a survey of 12,000 teachers.

Regarding pay progression "More than 90 per cent of those denied progression were not told during the year that they were not meeting the standards needed to progress, despite Government guidance that this should happen.

And although the vast majority (88 per cent) thought the decision to deny them progression was unfair, only one in five (22 per cent) are challenging the decision, with many saying that they have already been told not to bother appealing.

Although nearly a third (30 per cent) of those denied progression were told this was because they had not met pupil progress objectives, 17 per cent were told it was due to budgetary reasons, despite Government guidance that funding should not be a factor."

And the government wonders why we have a retention crisis.

No cost of living pay rise here either as we have no money at all in school, our authority is one of the worst funded.
Class sizes up, 33 in year 7 and 25 in my year 12 class, reduction in ppa to the bare minimum.

And my PGCE student is being paid £26,000 tax free to train this year 😡

I was on M6 years ago. Took a pay cut back to M2 because of years out childraising. Worked up to M6 again. Never got any further because of an essential pay cap. Such daft performance targets that nobody could ever hit them. When the best schools in our area get 70% ks2 SATS, to give any teacher a 100% target is tantamount to saying "no pay rise for You!"

The schools are now owned by two main trusts, apart from a remaining few, and it's totally unsurprising how many experienced teachers are laid off or capabilitied out to be replaced by unqualified staff and unpaid scitt students.

A sad situation and it's not surprising that so many are leaving.
