How long does it take to learn childrens names?

My DS had a new teacher in September (Year 5). Its a small class of only 22. She calls him, and the others, by other childrens names, some not even in their class. When he doesn't respond to her because she has called him someone elses name she gets cross and deducts team points/golden time etc

How long does it usually take a teacher to learn childrens names? I don't want to go into school and ask about it if it's not unusual to not know their names until after half term/later in the year. This has never been a problem with any of my other DC's Confused

Would as a teacher you think I'm being cheeky if I sent him wearing a name badge until she starts calling him by his actual name?

I work part time and knew all 30 kids names by the 3rd day. You just look at them when you are doing the rota and write down a quick table plan with their names.

I'm pretty bad with names, but I've generally got them all by the end of the first few days.

Except the year I had Braydon, Brandon, Cayden, Jayden, Aiden, Kaeden and Brendon. That was one hell of a year.

I am a supply teacher. By the end of day 1, I usually know at least 90% of names. I have been told I'm unusually good at names though Grin

Wow our head teacher actually studies photos of new nursery children so even she knows all her children and she won't even see them day to day. I would say class teachers should defo know them and (if your DD is accurate) I would be making a complaint about punishments for that. Would def be asking for clarification on that.

I could look at pictures for weeks, and still not be able to match them up with a name. My brain just doesn't seem to work that way. I need to actually interact with the child to make the connection.

I had an excruciating parents' evening session once where the teacher kept calling DS2 Billy (he's not called Billy). At one point I said "Do you mean DS2 because you keep saying Billy?" and she was mortified and apologetic. Then she promptly called him Billy again. DS2 is tiny and Billy is a giant of a lad - I can't fathom where it came from. Teacher was lovely but this was clearly some sort of brain melt for her - and I completely understood. It must be bloody hard.

I'm rubbish with names, I have 8 classes and know 1/3 in my new classes and most of the time know all in the classes I have for the second year.

Seating plans are my friend!

I'd love to just have 22 to learn!

I call my own kids the wrong names all the time! There's only 3 of them!

As for at work, I'm secondary but I have a boy in my form who also is in my class. I know his name is X but I always say Y. No idea why.
Think like his name. Is Derek and I say Darren type mix up.

By the end of the first week usually. But I often call 2 children by each others names. I don't know why it's just stuck in my head. Luckily they now see the funny side as laugh along with me. I got a cheer the other day when I got it right!
