Kittens ate lillies :(

Until today, I had no idea lillies were toxic to cats - dp came home with a bunch for me last week and they've been out in a vase on the dining room table ever since. My two kittens have been sniffing them all week really, and this morning I came downstairs and one of them had orange all over his fur and had clearly been biting the petals. Thought nothing of it and posted a cute pic on Facebook - I came back to lots of comments saying lillies are toxic! Rushed both kittens to the vets where they have been taken in. Their blood and urine isnt showing anything abnormal and their behaviour was normal too so I'm praying they've started the treatment early enough. I just want to cry, my house is so empty and quiet without them. Not only that, if the one who was definitely affected passes away, his sister will be so lonely I think I would have to rehome her. I feel like a terrible kitty mum :(

I only knew because a family member lost their cat to lilly :-(

So so happy to say that my kittens are absolutely fine, no long lasting organ damage and they are home now. I was so grateful to the vet and nurse looking after them, I think I'll take a card and gift (not flowers!!)

Thanks again everyone. They are gorgeous even if I do say so myself :) I think I'm going to get some false flowers so I don't accidentally buy another type that are toxic.

Oldraver, day lilies aren't on the list of poisonous garden plants, their Latin name is hemerocallis and they aren't really lilies, in fact they are edible, I've eaten the flowers, they're quite nice. Most of the plants on that list are poisonous to every thing not just cats, I remember ready about a puppy who died after eating foxglove leaves.

You completely and totally did the right thing in taking them to the vets. I'm so glad the news is good. Hope they're home and up to mischief very soon.

Glad they are ok, it was an honest mistake and you absolutely did the right thing in taking them to the vet.
Thanks for the link Oldraver - my cat is a nightmare when it comes to chewing plants. Each time I’ve had a new house plant/ garden plant I’ve had to do a lot of googling to make sure it won’t harm him as he just can’t help himself. My garden is stocked with ‘safe’ plants but I do worry about him when he is out and about, he’s daft enough to have a chomp on anything.

I'm pleased to see your update OP you must have been beside yourself with worry. You definitely did the right thing getting them treated, you'd never have forgiven yourself if they'd become poorly. Gorgeous cats💕

So glad they were ok this morning. It just wasn't worth the risk and you totally did the right thing getting them assessed and monitored by the vet.

I've got two babies, so your thread reminds me to ask my DH not to give me flowers containing lilies for our wedding anniversary this week.

Sorry x- post!
Glad they are doing well, you've been so lucky

We racked up a £3k bill and still had a dead cat at the end of it all. I'll never get over it, it happened on New Years Eve - I have lost cats for other reasons before and always been able to reconcile it. But can't come to terms with this as it was just so fast and so awful and we did it to him as we bought the flowers - so you 1000000% did the right thing in taking them in.

Amazing news!!! So pleased for you.

You absolutely did the right thing. Animals can't communicate pain, cats are notoriously good at hiding it actually. If you had waited for symptoms it could have been too late.

Btw, Salt & Pepper are gorgeous!

So sorry - hope they are ok

I lost a perfectly healthy 5 year old cat to lily poisoning 2 years ago - the stemens were cut out and he still died. I don't allow them in the house now. A friend who didn't realise got me flowers recently that contained lilies - as soon as she was gone they went straight in the bin. Hateful things.

Thank you Pinksparkly. It's people who don't have pets so probably don't realise how much they mean to me, and considering I didn't even know the flowers were toxic they probably didnt realise the severity of what could happen either.

Thanks everyone. Well I spoke to the vet this morning on the phone and they have shown no symptoms at all, playing and eating and going to the toilet as normal, they've had charcoal to soak up anything that could have been in their stomach but haven't been sick so the vets are saying they probably got a very tiny amount of the flower or none at all. Some of my family say I shouldn't have taken them (had to pay £160 excess for the insurance) and waited it out but I've read horror stories and no way, better safe knowing I've done all I can than sorry losing them and knowing I could have done something. They are keeping them in for some more fluids but as long as their bloods are normal levels in the morning they can come home. Thank goodness.

OP. Well done on quick response. Hope kitten OK? Our Friends have been lovely and sent me flowers over the last few years because I have a chronic condition and been in hospital loads. Usually, other half takes pics and sends to buyer with thanks on my behalf. We're too embarrassed to say we give flowers immediately away because cat immediately immerses himself in bouquet and we can't take the risk!

I had exactly the same thing happen to one of my cats when it was a kitten. I suddenly noticed that his fur was all yellow. I thought it was funny at first but then the penny dropped. I phoned my vet and she told me to bath him and take him in if I thought he was becoming ill. My mum helped me to bath him and we were both shredded! Luckily he was absolutely fine and he's 6 now but I can remember how terrified I was. I've attached a photo after we had washed him.

I hope your kitten is OK Op. I know exactly how you feel.
