Would you? Or would you just take cat to the vets and then tell DS that cat passed away?

Thank you so much everyone for your lovely reassuring words. The vet was very kind and allowed us to chat over my options and discuss her outlook. There was no rushing despite me having made the appointment specifically for PTS. The prognosis for Gracie was hopeless and would have involved invasive surgery, MRI scans and as the problem was neurological and involved both her spine and her brain it was pretty much a fait acomplis that she had to be let go....I still feel awful though...

Flowers so very sorry, she was a stunningly beautiful cat. Big loves. Hope your children are alright and of course you too. Have been there myself. Numerous times.

So sorry for your loss, take comfort in the fact that if she didn't fight it she was ready to go. That's what I tell myself about my old girl that we lost a couple of years ago, she was unable to walk and had stopped eating and it was peaceful for her too, she was quietly gone within moments of having the injection. It hurts but you did the right thing.

So sorry you've lost your girl. From your posts it sounds the kindest thing for her but very sad.

I'm so sorry you have lost your beautiful girl.
You did the right thing but it's hard on you. We had our 19 year old pts in July. It too was peaceful. The vet said she was ready.

My beautiful girl is gone....Sad SadSad. I have never witnessed a pet being put to sleep before but it was so peaceful and quick. I sobbed and sobbed, it was so sad and yet so gentle too.

I'm so sorry for you Stirred. We have two much adored kitties, with one of whom I expect to be in a similar situation in the next 18 months. I'm sitting here in tears for you, I can't imagine how hard today is. May Gracie rest in peace in a heaven full of catnip and laser pointers and never feel another day's pain. A very big, 'un-mumsnet-ish' hug to you and your DC's.

You have taken the advice of your vet, so you know it is right. Sad We've lost a few pets over the years and always discussed it with the DC as helping them to die the gentlest and most comfortable way. I'm so sorry, she's gorgeous.

I think that, if you are considering it, then it is the right decision :( Flowers

Oh love, it's so hard isn't it?

Gracie has no quality of life now so it's the right decision.

Thanks and hugs for you OP.

Yes, it's part of growing up and learning about how we care about our cats and don't let them suffer.

Report
tootsietoo · 06/01/2016 11:28

Definitely. And explain why it is the kind and right thing to do and how much worse to leave the cat to suffer. And give him a chance to say goodbye. If you believe you are doing the right thing then you should show your son how you are doing the right thing. I think we are lucky to be able to do this for our pets - it's about their comfort at the end, not our feelings.

I think I will tell him the truth. Then he will have no expectations of her coming home rather than me having to pick him up and then tell him that she 'didn't make it.' Might be best to get it all out in the open before. Ugh! Horrid time Sad

Both DD and DS2 who was 12 had to be picked up from school the following day for "feeling unwell".
