The litter tray

Advice please - cat behaving oddly

I would be grateful for any advice please - as our 20 month old neurtered ginger tom cat is behaving a bit oddly.

I think he was under our bed tonight so when we got into bed he emerged, which is usual, although not unheard of.

He is normally shut in kitchen at night with access to cat flap litter trays, food and water in utility area etc.

Tonight when I carried him down to the kitchen he made a rather pathetic yowley sound although he does not appear to be in pain.

I put out some Dreamies, which he ignored.

SO i took him into living room so I can observe him.

He is sat on the sofa in a really weird way with his legs tucked under him. He normally curls up in a ball.

Just wondering if any of this is ringing any bells with any one, please?

He seems to be fine, not in pain, closing eyes and just sitting on sofa.

Thanks so much.

Sorry Cozie only just saw this. He is better. He as medicine and has cost us about £500 in vets bills, luckily we have pet insurance. But he is well.

Thanks for asking.

Try to keep him in if you can. I have a dodgy disc (after an ill-advised move many years ago) and the worst trouble I've ever had has not been from the spine itself but from the compensatory muscles in my back being badly strained after trying to do just the same things as I always did while fighting through the pain barrier. As much rest as possible is likely what he needs.

(A word to the wise. Never, ever try to move a heavy old wardrobe by yourself.)

He is looking better but still not 100%. Not walking normally exactly, it is obvious he is a bit tender. Plus he hates being indoors all day!

Actually a bite or scratch can cause far more trouble than you'd ever Imagine. One of my cats is a devil for fighting and has come home with numerous injuries that haven't been detected but have eventually been revealed due to lethargy, unusual behaviour/eating habits, a high temperature etc.

Not necessarily. Skin is tough stuff - and if it was a glancing blow which eg made him land awkwardly or against a hard object, well - who can tell?

Fingers crossed for him anyway. Let us know how he does.

the back bite because of infection (raised temperature) or maybe slipped disk.

If it was a car accident wouldn't there be blood? There was none.

That's what I was thinking too - I take it they've checked his claws aren't scuffed? If not he could maybe have twisted his back jumping or something?

I was worried he could have been clipped by a slow car or bike, and thrown to the curb and survived with invisible injuries. Just hope that they can do something.

My cat it at the vet having an operation on her cut, getting it stitched up. It feels so strange her not being here! I was wrapping something uo earlier and I really missed her 'help'.

Do so hope your cat gets fully recovered, italielan.

A bite on his back or something wrong with his back structure?

Thanks guys. Back to vet last night (not in middle of night, local vet). She thinks it is his back. He is at home for 5 days, taking medication and hopefully recovering.

Thanks

Poor wee thing. Mine do exactly the behaviour you described after a fight - cat bites can be really difficult to spot and you only know when abscess develops or bursts. They are nasty and get infected. You've done right thing taking to vet as hopefully now you've caught any infection before it gets too nasty. A burst abscess is not pleasant!

My cats do what you described - hiding, not happy to be touched, slinking away, making weird growl or huffing noises. I always take them straight to vet now as I recognise the signs.

Hope your kitty feels better soon

Ah, I hope he feels better soon Italian.
Something similar happened to my cat, ie fight plus invisible wound, then infection (though no kitty groaning). She became an emergency because we hadn't realised what had happened.
It's really good you've caught the infection early!

Oh well done OP for spotting the situation needed attention. Xmas Smile

You and him need to curl up together and get some zzzzzz's.

Hope he perks up soon, bet he will. I'm hoping our cat will be less willing to get into big fights after his recent spat making him suffer a bit. Xmas Hmm

Our cat had those injections too (she has a cut on her leg which is infected) and has been lying oddly. I put the electric blanket on and let her lie on my bed yesterday and she just flaked out! She was ok gping up and down stairs (apart from the cone getting in the way) and was trying to jump on the windowsill this morning, as usual (fine, apart from the cone again, she hates it!)

Well done for getting him up there because it sounds as if he wasn't at all well and likely in pain.

Good luck to him - and let us know how he gets on.

Sorry guys did not feel able to update last night as very tired. It was a long drive there and back in the middle of the night!

Cat is OK. The vet thinks he was in a dight but we cannot see a wound, but said the bite must have got infected as he had a temoeratrure. His ears were very hot and they took his temperature. They gave him three shots, pain killer and antibiotic.

He came home and ate some food.

He is asleep on the floor under the Christmas tree.

He is behaving oddly as would normally sleep on the sofa or a bed.

We have an appointment for 6.30 at Vet if he is not better but I hope he is on the mend.

Thanks for caring. Grin
