I am devastated.

He was 15 years old, so had a great innings. His legs and joints finally gave out very suddenly this afternoon and he became unable to support himself or get up.

Just back from the out of hours vet. He is at peace now.

Maybe I will post a picture tomorrow when I can possibly face it.

What a handsome boy! I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like he was an amazing dog Thanks

Thanks again. Our spaniel is coping, but looks a little lonely without him. She is 14 herself, so an elderly lady. Still fairly crazy and comparatively exuberant although she is slowing down somewhat now.

He has a very kind face! What a lovely boy. We have a Charlie too who is now nearly 12 and we would all be as devastated as you when we lose him.

I'm so sorry OP Flowers

Our beloved Lab was PTS this year, he sounds very similar to your boy. I felt better once his ashes came home. He is in a labrador urn that has a collar and his tags on. How is your other dog coping? Our other dog had separation anxiety for months, he really did seem to be grieving along with the rest of us x

So sorry for your loss op Flowers Charlie was very handsome & obviously loved very much.

I lost my beloved boy in july & I know grief is a very personal thing but once I got his ashes back I had a small bit put into a charm bracelet.

Not to everyone's taste but it's a huge comfort to me knowing hes near.

Thank you. I am still struggling with it at the moment. I know it was the right and the only kind thing to do, but it is so hard.

He was my first dog, and perhaps therefore my dog of a lifetime. I learned so much from him, and also spoilt him rotten and probably let him get away with far too much.

He has just very suddenly declined dramatically that afternoon, having been reducing his appetite over the last week. Suddenly, he simply couldn't get up anymore. DH and two of my three DDs were able to come to the vets, and DH and DD3 (who is 17) had to carry him in between them as he could no longer do it himself. That was such a sad sight and we all knew what we had to do.

The tears still keep coming, but I think I will feel better when we have his ashes back.

Oh OP I feel for you. It is the hardest thing in the world. Take comfort in the fact that you loved him dearly and that you gave him a long and happy life.

Thanksso sorry OP - it must have been a shock, but so much better for him that it was quick.

Re the photos, I think it can take time for them to upload to the MN servers, and I'd guess there may be different ones for the various platforms.

So sorry OP. 💐💕. As a dog owner myself, I have a lump in my throat reading your posts. Your beautiful lab was a very handsome chap (he looks proud!) and you are absolutely right, he had a wonderful, loved, happy innings. Way to raw at the moment, but in time you'll remember these great times and smile.

Why do photos work for some and not for others? I have never understood that. I'll maybe try again tomorrow.

I'm glad the photo worked. For some reason I can't see it on here.

I'm very sad, but in a strange way relieved that I was able to make the decision needed at the time it was needed. I'll never stop missing him. At the moment I am very tearful and can hardly believe he is gone. My greatest friend for 15 years.

I was trying to eat some food DD3 had prepared for me after we got back this evening. We all just suddenly realised that never again would he be there nudging up beside us at the table hoping to steal some food.

He was also a great partner in crime with our cat, who sadly had to be put to sleep on Christmas morning 2017. I well remember the day that they collaborated to steal a cake that DD1 had baked but not boxed up and put away (despite me telling her). The cat appeared to have jumped up and kicked it down from the worktop and had then joined both dogs (we still have a cocker spaniel) in eating it. None of us humans even got a crumb.

Thank you all.

His name was Charlie. He was our greatest friend for 15 years and leaves a massive hole. A massive labrador sized hole.

He was a real character. I remember one holiday in North Wales near Abersoch. Walking along the beach with him running off lead. He ran around a beached fishing boat, emerged with a carrier bag in his mouth, which I took off him. A man appeared out of nowhere and asked me if my dog had possible eaten his organic bacon fishing bait. Sure enough, the bag was empty. Of course it was. The organic bacon fishing bait was in the labrador.

I'm sure I will remember others.
