The doghouse

FUCKING DDOG has just eaten a mince pie FFS

She's a terrible thief (lurcher) and we have been so, so careful with mince pies, chocolate etc. DS left a mince pie out for Santa, and I put it out of reach (I thought) for ONE MINUTE while I nipped upstairs to get changed. Left DDog sleeping on the sofa, and came down to find just crumbs.

Emergency vet says she'll have to stay in for 24 hours, even though she ate it less than 1/2 hour ago. Fucking hell. I just want her here for Christmas SadSad

8 years ago we had a big family Xmas at our house. We had no idea raisins were toxic to dogs. Our border terrier ate FOUR mince pies. Basically unbeknownst to us my MIL had given homemade ones as gifts and my sister put hers under her chair at the dinner table. The dog ate all of them - ate through all the wrapping and cellophane and scoffed them down. We had no idea raisins were toxic and she suffered no ill effects at all. She passed / we had her pts unexpectedly this Christmas Eve through cancer - fucking horrendous day. But reading this post we were just saying how fortunate we were to have had another 8 christmasses with her as we only found out about raisins a couple of years ago. We always knew about chocolate but not raisins. My toddlers dropped them regularly but the dogs never touched them. She was such a hardy girl, four mince pies and just a farty bum to show for it.

LEM that is exactly what they did, although I think roughly an hour had passed by the time they were able to make her vomit, which is probably why they did the full Monty.

Mini xmas lunch of left overs? They are for you and not the dog of course!! My dogs get ONE small piece of turkey each. I aint clearing up the results of anymore.

Seriously, she has had a stressful time so her digestion is limely to be a bit skew. Hold off on the turkey 😁

If they got her to sick it up then she shpuld have been able to come home

We have owners wait while we give them an emetic which ususlly works within 30m-1hr. If the dog isnt sick or the raisins were consumed over an hour ago (ish) we keep them on ibtensive fluids for 24 hours. We then run bloods 24/48 hrs later to see if any damage to kidneys/liver. We also give activated charcoal to abdorb any toxins.

I am surprised this wasnt what was done with your dog.

So glad she is back home!

DPuppy (rescue and still obsessed with food) managed to steal

  • a Christmas ball
  • one of those little sachets that keep presents dry and say DO NOT EAT on them
  • three foam balls
  • and a piece of cake.

I managed to get everything off him before he swallowed anything apart from the mouse the cat gifted him first thing in the morning which he swallowed whole and quickly!

Read this with interest. I'm puppy sitting a 6 month short haired terrier today. All while my dad goes out. I have removed chocs off tree. Hidden all mince pies and cakes in a cupboard. But having a buffet so will be stood up eating trying not to drop crumbs

Well usually huskies are magnificent creatures, but sorry to say yours does look like an absolute dick Grin

She came back late last night! She's very tired, but happy to be back. We brought in a bottle of wine and some Hotel Chocolat raspberry almonds to say thank you. Today we're going to do a second Christmas for her - she's going to open her presents (again, I re-wrapped them after the Christmas Eve debacle) and then have a mini Xmas lunch of leftovers.

Glad that she's doing ok! I'm guessing they want to check bloods before they discharge her hence the wait. Hope the results went ok!

Just wanted to say about the comment about staff on double time - that's pretty unlikely IME. Where I work, you are assigned bank holidays on the rota, 1 or 2 each year depending on your position/seniority. If you're assigned Christmas Day, that's it, and it's just part of your normal salary/hours. Locum staff will be paid more if they're needed.

Did your girl come home last night or do you collect her today?

Our twat of a husky ate the eyes off a reindeer teddy today. He’s fine, vomited them up. Has spent the rest of Christmas farting and sleeping. Dickhead.

I had no idea that dogs shouldn't eat raisins Blush
Looks like we've been lucky with our dogs thank goodness.

Yeah, I think they're almost entirely taken up dealing with mince pie thieves. DH said that when he brought her in, the vet had just finished dealing with another dog who had eaten one, and then there was another one (terrier) immediately after.

Lurchers eh? I think they're harder than other dogs in some respects, because they lull you into a sense of false security. 23 hours of the day they're just foul smelling pet rocks, then as soon as you turn your back, they're free climbing up the kitchen wall like Ethan Hunt.

So glad she's ok. My previous thieving little bugger rummaged through my DM's shopping bag a few years ago and was stuffing down grapes when we caught her, we had to do the emergency run to the vet and 24 hours in. My current thieving little bugger lives to cause a panic run to the vet via Christmas decoration ingestion and has made several valiant attempts.

My dog ate a single raisin on the 20th, we were due to fly to the US the next day and the dog was due to be dropped at BILs that evening. The raisin fell off the side in the kitchen while I was cutting myself a piece of Christmas cake, the dog was on it before I could stop her.

Two minutes later I was on my phone to the vets, and within twenty minutes I was sitting in a treatment room holding my dog while she vomited (I volunteered to hold her). The vet had said if the dog didn’t vomit up the raisin they would have to put her on fluids for twenty four hours Shock which would have meant me staying at home while the rest of the family went away. The relief at seeing the dog vomit covered raisin was huge. We were home an hour later, they charged me £80, which compared to some of the posts here seems a bit of a bargain now.

I feel your pain we had a lurcher on Christmas day manage to get hold of a large bar of chocolate despite being on a high unit about 6 years ago.
We spent Christmas day feeding her liquid charcoal every few hours!

Nothing quite as dramatic as your Christmas incident. But this year I have wrapped him in cotton wool and told him we need a break from the vets Grin

The first was diarrhoea and he was only a few months old so we couldn't risk it and as it was getting worse we took him in and he needed antibiotics.

The second time last year was the pits. Just before they closed for Xmas he sliced his paw pad open. They attempted to glue it and dressed it but said we needed to have the dressing changed every two to three days. So Christmas Day morning we had to go to the emergency vets for a dressing to be changed. Spent every 2-3 days back again when they found the glue wasn't holding it and then he had to have it stapled. That meant we were still going for dressing changes over the New year as it took over three weeks to heal.

I did have a natter to the vet nurses on the Xmas morning dressing change about whether they expected to be busy and they said it's always chaotic in the afternoon when the dogs have gotten hold of the mince pies and chocolates Grin. So I expect there are a few dogs going through the same thing.

Fingers crossed you get her back this evening and you can spend a bit of Christmas Day fussing over her.

Bitey come on then, tell the stories!

Been too busy so far to really miss her, although it'll be tough this evening when she's usually sprawled groaning on the sofa. Vet says we may not get her back till tomorrow, depending on how busy they are - apparently they're absolutely manic this time of year. We should know by 9pm.

This is the third Christmas with BiteyDog and the first where we are not at the emergency vets. I am sure they know how to time everything for maximum chaos Grin

Bollocks, wrote a long reply and then lost it.

Judas ShockGrin (and still haven't forgiven you for betraying me, BTW).

Yeah have insurance, but she's worth it anyway. 5 years from now we won't miss £640, but we'd still be missing her. Plus - £640 is a fair price for a valuable lesson. If it hadn't happened now, it would have happened sooner or later.

Rang for an update this morning - she's doing great. Slept all night, did a big shit and then had another nap. So thus far, she's winning at Christmas Grin DS perfectly OK with not having her around for the day, which was one of my worries. I think he's got too much else to do to think about it.

We're holding out for better luck next Xmas. She won't be wiser or better trained, but hopefully she will have slightly slower reflexes Grin
