Advice please-dog has eaten smoked salmon

ArtichokeHeartsAppleCarts · 16/01/2017 16:13

My 2 year old greyhound has just snaffled a bit of smoked salmon (about a 2p piece size) from the worktop-I've googled and now scared myself witless about salmon poisoning/parasites. It was wild Alaskan salmon. Does anyone know vaguely what the chances are of him getting sick from salmon poisoning? I read that symptoms tend to appear after 5-7 days but can take longer so will be keeping a very close eye but any advice/experience would be great. TIA

Sorry to hear of your sudden separation from your dddog (dear-departed-dog)

It can shake you badly. I know my recent dcat loss has brought home to me how suddenly and potentially easily it can happen and how unbearable that thought.

Whats the concensus on the salmon then? does it present any risk to ddogs?

Prepare for greyhound farts. 😱

That is all.

And I'm sorry about your other dog. I'm sure this will be fine though.

No you're not being paranoid or silly, pets are precious family members and when you lose one it is awful. Of course you are going to be extra vigilant, I would be too.
Hope all is well.

Posie thank you for being kind

I can see how my OP might sound a bit paranoid/silly-our first dog died very suddenly so I expect I am reacting disproportionately because of this

I was about the get snippy myself. Good thing I googled first. Blush

It just seems so unbelievable, we eat it, so assume it ought to be OK.

Goodness, something else I've learnt. Ddog gets the right hump if I don't give him a few scraps when I make myself a bagel.

Sorry for the loss of your dog OP.

Bless you, you've had some very harsh responses on here. Flowers for your loss, and your worry is completely understandable. Sorry you've not had more support, hope your dog is OK.

i think the dog will be fine....pretty sure that even raw salmon for sushi is safe.

unless of course you smoke your own wild alaskan salmon and might have skimped on the food safety aspect?

I was thinking a whole side of smoked salmon had gone missing, in which case I'd expect a whippy poo selection and or possible vomiting.

Blimey.

I just googled and it seems true.
My boys have eaten their way through a lot of salmon in their time, do I have to eat it all myself now?

FannyWisdom · 16/01/2017 16:24

In that case condolences.

But really what's good enough for us will be fine Flowers

You're worried about the dog eating parasites, but presumably not yourself? Confused

You should see what our dog snaffles! Honestly, there is nothing to worry about, other than he might develop rather picky tastes Grin

I didn't know it was a thing. Now I'll add it to the list along with chocolate and grapes and raisins and fruit stones and apple cores ...
