Here's a list of inexpensive fairly decent dog foods on the market, All scoring 3.5/5 or more. You can add your dogs weight to get a more accurate daily cost check.

BEFORE you feed your dog any food stuff check out the all about dog website for a nutrition and ingredient breakdown. This is a very poor food as expected:

www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/1755/earls-moist-and-meaty-complete

Cereals, Meat & Animal Derivatives (26% Meat, Beef 4%), Various Sugars, Derivatives of Vegetable Origin, Oils and Fats, Minerals, Hydrolysed Yeast and Chicory Extracts, Antioxidants, Preservatives.

Lidl dog food is just as bad.

www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0820/orlando-complete

Cereals, Meat and Animal Derivatives (4% Beef), Derivatives of Vegetable Origin, Vegetables (4% Peas), Minerals, Oils and Fats, Yeasts, Antioxidants BHA/BHT (E320/E321) and Colourants (E172).

These foods are false economy as you have to feed more to get more nutrient from volume of food consumed. Better to feed a higher quality food which may cost as little as 20p a day more but nutritionally superior with human grade fresh food and vegetable without grains and fillers.

You can put your dogs weight and age into the website to get a cost a day to feed your dog. Then you just have to stick to the feeding guidelines and weigh the food out. I use Eden Holistic Dogs food which is 65p a day.

My lovely JRT was fed Aldi dog food right up to the end of his (long) life. He was fed a combination of wet and dry food and loved their pate. He was less keen on the Langham’s kibble - I’m afraid to say his absolute favourite was Wagg. But for sure he did jolly well on Aldi food.

The puppy is too little right now so he’s getting a rather more indulgent choice. However, I’ll be switching him to Aldi when he’s older too.

Like the poster above, I feed my Skyes Dr John's. It's the only thing that stops their hair shedding enough to recarpet the house. The bonus is the price as it's VAT free.

Hi we give our dogs Aldi dog food to our dogs, they have heaps of enmergy, maintain their weight, and the dogs love it, we had a really skinny dog tha5 we were looking after, she was malnutritioned when we got her but after several months of having the Aldi dog food, her fur grew back, her gums were pink, her eyes were clear and she gained weight, never once has any of my dogs has lose bowels or have vomited,
It’s a great product,

I tried the Aldi Langham's food for my girl. She liked it, but she pooed for Britain and after a bag her fur was beginning to loose it's shine and her breath smelled. So we went back to Harringtons - she loves the salmon variety. Back to normal poo, no bad breath and her fur is back to being soft and shiny.

Take a look at allaboutdogfood.co.uk. Go for nothing less than a 3 out of 5. Look for one with a named meat source as one of the first three ingredients and avoid anything with maize or wheat as many dogs are intolerant.
Price is not an indication of quality - there are plenty of poor foods with a top price tag.
In my view one of the best price to quality ratios is Skinners Field and Trial as its about the same price as Bakers/Pedigree/Wagg but far superior quality.

hi

sorry to resurrect an old thread, regarding the Aldi dog food the normal Earls one is very poor as its cereal based however they have a new dog food called Langhams.

This new Aldi dog food is fantastic and my dogs love it. scores 3.5 out of 5 at all about dog food and costs £6.99 for 5kg.

If the admins dont mind me linking I have done an honest review of the new Langhams at mcfurrys.com/new-aldi-dog-food-review/

It gave my cocker spaniel the runs. Took me a while to work out it was the food because he's always just had any supermarket brand so it never crossed my mind, I just thought he was ill.

Cat food is much higher in protein than dogs food so that might cause issues long term.

Dog food is very very bad for cats because they don't add taurine to most dog foods.
In fact, I don't know any that have taurine, without taurine a cat will become blind and their heart will fail..

I think dog food's bad for cats? I've fed it to them for five years now and the vets happy with their condition. One of them survived for a year eating nappies and scraps before I got her so probably got an iron gut Smile

Isn't cat food bad for dogs? Maybe the meat is different but I got some for pooch when I ran out once as an emergency (local shop had none) and got told off. Was biscuits.

I've got two lurchers and two terriers who have constant access to dry food, and the lurchers get tinned food as well. On the Aldis or Lidls dry food they created a gigantic amount of poo so I'm currently trying other brands. I buy the Lidls cat food in jelly for the lurchers, £1.99 for 6 tins. Bargain....

I had a look on that site Aldi food isn't listed so no help to me we have decided to keep her on what's she's happy with and just give her raw meat and bones to bump up her nutrition once a week

tallulah if by full access to the bag you mean he can help himself by putting his head in please don't let him. When I was a vet nurse I had to collect a dog that had suffocated itself in this way whilst it's owner was out. Very traumatic for the poor lady (and the dog)

As a PP says, it is not as clear cut as saying X costs £20 a bag, Y costs £50, therefore Y is obviously better. A dog who cannot digest the good quality food is in a worse situation than the dog happily eating food from Aldi or wherever.

I have also found that the dry complete sacks work out much cheaper than they appear as they last so long. ATM we are feeding Burns Alert which is under £40 for a 12kg bag (vat free) This will last us 2 1/2 weeks for two working cockers (who are currently at the end of a hard season so increased food needs) and a Staffie X whippet. Small, reasonable smelling poos, nice breath and shiny coats :)

Pedigree chum will give her "chum bum" be warned!!

We tried our rescue on many fantastic expensive dog foods she ate none of them, turned her nose up, we have now settled on barking heads with tinned pedigree chum in gravy mixed in, she much prefers what ever we are eating or something out the bin.
