When my other dog was a pup, I had just had a baby, my second one, my sister had died 6 months previously, I went out and left the dogs in the house and forgot to lock the kitchen door. The had literally emptied the whole of the fridge and freezer, even eaten frozen yorkshire puddings, there was food and sick everywhere! My first thought was;

1. I will have to take them to the vets
   
2. what a mess, this is going to take a long time to clean up
   
3. I will have to remember to lock the door in future, maybe a lock for the fridge would be a good idea
   
4. i am a bloody idiot
   
   At no point did I think, i must get rid of the dogs WTF is wrong with people? Dogs aren't sodding rocket science

I was discussing our dog and impending baby with Dh a few nights ago he said "I hope Ddog gets along with the baby otherwise we will have to rehome the baby" This from the man who once told me he hates dogs.

My Lab/Collie cross was always getting threatened with getting taking to the local dog home as a pup. I always told her "next time you chew something I am taking you to Cardonald". I always wonder what she could have chewed that would have been so bad that I would have taken her back. She ate rugs, pulled up a brand new carpet, money, two mobile phones, skirting boards and a couch. She is 13 years old now and still with me
All of which was down to me realising it was my inexperienced owner stupidity and not her fault. In her favour was she is the most loving and friendly dog. Which also did not stop people telling me I should get rid of her when I got pregnant. She had been part of the family for 6 years at that point ffs

Mine is a rescuse dog she had 2 pervoius owners one of which brought her back after 24 hours beacause she weed on the carpet.

I got her at 6mths house trained her it took a long while for her to settle even now after 7:5 yrs she a bit of a velrco dog she is the most loyal gentel animal you could ever.

I think people just dont realise they have to work with them to get them settled. When she came to us she had poorly tum and cost me 100 pounds at the cet with injections and meds it never occocured to me to take her back

I got one of my dogs at 14 weeks old because the owner found out she was pregnant with her second baby.
I have 3 under 5 and now pregnant with DC4 and I wouldn't dream of rehoming one of my dogs because I have children.

We had ddog for 5 months when I got pregnant.
It was unbelievable how many people asked if we were going to keep her when the baby came

It had never even occured to me and dh. Ddog was part of the family. Baby would be part of the family. Any problems that might arise would be dealt with as and when.

I have actually broken contact with a friend (not very close but had known her for years) over the treatment of her dog. She had a 7yo dog and two children aged 3 and 7, but had to get rid of the dog because she didn't have time for it.
Which in theory maybe, just maybe, would be fine, if I didn't know for a fact that she had extra (paid) childcare so that she had time for herself to go to the gym, go jogging, etc etc.
Wtf not take some of that time and look after your bloody dog? How can get rid of a dog that had been with you for SEVEN YEARS?

My in laws' old jack Russell ate a whole Sunday dinner off the plate on the table. Well apart from the broccoli. He didn't like broccoli.

FIL only left the table for a minute.

My dog is the worse scavenger ever. So we make sure she can't get things. We try to make allowances for her go go gadget legs.

There is a poster on another forum who runs a small dog rescue. At the end of each year she posts a list of reasons why owners have given their dogs over to her. The best one ever was "dog doesn't co-ordinate with the curtains" but loads are objections to really mundane predictable puppy behaviour like the puppy ate my dinner when I left it under his nose, I left the puppy alone for 10 hours and it chewed the sofa, it's been two days and it's still not house-trained, etc. There is so much information on pet ownership on line (not to mention books, trainers, etc) I don't understand what people are thinking when they get a dog. Some of the posts on here are so incredible you wonder if they are made up on purpose.

I got my pup at 16 weeks after her owner couldnt handle her. He didnt say why exactly, but I think it may of been because she wasnt toilet trained (eventhough he had said she was) 2 weeks after getting her she was 100% toilet trained and knew loads of tricks and now 3 months later is the best dog I could of asked for. I dont know how anyone can get rid of a pet, I get attached after 5 mins lol.

It bugs me when people sell a 10 week old puppy because they are "out at work all day and it's not fair on the dog". Surely you knew this 2 weeks ago when you got the pup??

I'll admit I didn't think it through properly when I got my current dog; I had two very elderly dogs and had completely forgotten how much hard work a puppy was, plus hadn't thought through the logistics of exercising a pup alongside two that couldn't really walk that far, whilst pushing a pushchair! However, I never once considered getting rid of her, just changed my routine and employed a dog walker for when I was at work. Some people just don't think past "aww isn't it cute?"

I have had 3 or 4 dogs here that my "friends" have wanted rid of, the worst was a dog called tiny... He was a st Bernard. He'd been kept outside in a pen that wasn't big enough for him and wasn't trained in any way, he was 2.

I took him, got a huge pen, despite the neighbours kids feeding him stuff and winding him up, he was amazing, I adored that dog! He was 4 when he died, the vet said it was almost certainly caused by his ill treatment before he came to us.

My dh did animal care and is known as the guy that sorts out dogs... I've currently got a seriously malnutritioned (if that's the right word) 7 month old pup in my kitchen. He was in our garden when we got home from shopping last week.

I've no idea what to do with him.. I suspect he might be a pitbull too so he will probably be pts...

One of our fosters stole and ate and entire loaf of bread, that I bought to make my supper with.

When DH told me I asked how that was possible, when I had hidden it at the back of the worktop, he told me "D0oin, when that dog stands up on her back legs, she is taller than you, there is no where in the kitchen you can reach, that she can't"

I bought a small stool and kept the bread on top of the cupboards after that. Sending her back didn't occur to me.

My previous boss got a Weimeraner puppy, then he & his DW had planned pregnancy. They got rid of the dog as it was too much hard work. I've never had a dog of my own but I could have told him that! I completely lost all respect for him, selfish t**t.
It was a really good natured dog as well. Bastard.

One of my close friends did this and ill admit I lost a lot of respect for her and thought your an idiot really.

Her DD was scared of dogs so she and her DH decided the best way to "cure" her was to buy a puppy (probable as next door were buying its litter mate) anyway they bought a puppy the next day I went round to see it as you do but already it was obvious they hasn't thought it through, it had already chewed up half the garden and they were moaning.

Anyway 2 weeks later the puppy was given away as they are both out working FT and couldn't come gone to let it out, WTF didn't you think of that at the time?

Don't know who they got the puppy from, probably not a diligent breeder if they give a puppy to anyone pitching up with £600.

We would live a dog but right now is not the time for us to have one

Sometimes when people separate their circumstances change poorpaws , maybe have to move into rented accommodation that don't allow pets etc. I had to move to a council place and I'm not strictly allowed to have a dog here (ssshhh) but I've had her many years and am not giving up a ten year old dog that is settled with me. The woman who gave her up at the pound had a history of getting puppies, then handing them back when they got too big. They banned her.

I do agree some people simply don't understand the amount of work and money a dog can be until they are faced with the harsh reality of it.

My dog snatched two slices of bread from the work surface whilst I nipped to the loo. I was looking around for the bread for ages before I twigged.

Also people get rid of dogs when they separate. When I got divorced I was willing to fight for my two dogs just as much as for my daughter. (Got them all without too many problems thank goodness).

I've just come home to find puppy poo smeared all over the kitchen floor, the water bowl empty (content on floor also) and a basket of plastic bags cleverly removed from a cupboard and also smeared in said poo!

My first thought was 'oh shit.....,' the second 'look at pups amazing wagging tail, he is so happy to see me' and final 'this is my fault because he's been alone for two hours'.

My parents recently adopted a cross chihuahua/jack russell. He's microchipped and when it was read, it turned out that he'd originally been named Twilight. Poor boy had a convoluted history, it turns out that he'd been sold, probably when his original owners realised he was a bit too big to fit in a handbag or carry everywhere (hate this craze) and his new owners just let him wander and were never traced.

Sometimes people take on too much.

If they really can't cope, it's better if the dog goes to someone who can cope.
