Sorry Kerfuffle I just meant to say that it was an interesting point made on the programme - I agree totally that smoking is worse as it affects others too, but i do think the government should take it more seriously and be educating people - similar to smoking, drink driving and other such campaigns????

what I found really interesting (but he totally glossed over) was that the dangerous levels in his bloods went DOWN in the last week - basically the human body has the amazing ability to cope with radical change in diet.

They were all a bunch of drama queens, weren't they?

Scary that it takes a movie to make a difference to Micky Ds (fighting propaganda with the same) but all power to him.

Just to get this off my chest!

Nothing annoys me more than when kids and parents walk out of macdonalds in a shopping centre, and wait for a lift to get to the next floor!!!!!!!!
HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You lazy b's there are about 12 bloody escalators in the shopping centre too!

We want to get our prams in the lift ,BUT what a surprise, when you are in there,(taking up room) where is the pram supposed to go?????????

motherofboys, sorry can't agree with you on the smoking thing. I think if a person chooses to overeat he/she is only affecting themselves.Smoking has become socially unacceptable because it affects others around them who don't get a choice about breathing in the secondhand smoke.Admittedly they both affect health service resources b ut then where do you draw the line. Do you make dangerous sports socially unacceptable?

One of my soapbox things this - eating junk food is a lot more expensive - you can buy half a sack of potatoes for the price of a McDs meal (or bag of frozen chips) and fresh fruit n veg is sooooo much cheaper than all the processed rubbish. I agree with the bloke in the film who likened obesity and over eating to smoking which has become socially unacceptable!!

velcrobott · 29/04/2005 13:27

Expatkat, I agree about junk food not being cheaper... and it IS about education and habits.
We have a food budget of £60/week and we eat organic... it can be done.

Kerfuffle, you're right about portions in the US. I noticed this on a recent trip to Disney World. I couldn't believe the portions "for one." We're a family of 4 (with a 5yr old and a 2yr old, neither of whom eat much admittedly) and, because I obviusly think about food differently from other Americans, I would order a meal "for one" and we'd share it among the four of us, and feel perfectly satisfied.

I thought this movie was fascinating. What I loved was how it showed the huge gulf between New Yorkers and "the rest of" America. New Yorkers are rarely overweight, though obesity is admittedly highter among lower income groups here, andit's truewe walk constantly, and that makes a difference.

I'm not sure I buy the notion that eating crappy food is cheaper than eating well. I just caught up with a friend here who is actually quite poor, lives very much hand to mouth. She's about 8 and a half stone, like me, and eats very simply, very cheaplyand it's not a diet that contains fast food, which she might well view as a luxury. Eating fast food constantly has more to do with education and expectation, I think. It's about what you're used to, and it's about a refusal to change habitsand who can't relate to that?

I let my kids eat at McDonalds from time to time, by the way. My strategy is that if they just want to eat 1 or 2 of their chicken nuggets or just 4 of their french fries, I let them and never argue with them to eat more, explaining to them that the food is rubbish so it doesn't matter if they eat more or less. Then I eat their leftovers, so I don't have to spend money/absorb the calories of a proper adult meal "for one."

What about the guy who ate them regularly (the one with the ponytail and severe fringe and matching wife ) He was slim??

The blood results at the end were very scary. The GP's face was a picture.

I can understand pastries and muffins being a breakfast food....after all, the french do superb breakfast food in the way of croissants and pain au chocolate.....(yum I might add)

But I still can't see how bacon and maple syrup work together! And who would try such a thing in the first place tho, Mind you, I am not a lover of any sweet stuff with savoury.....still get confused as to why you would want to put apple sauce with pork[confoosed face needed!]

I know! Bacon with maple syrup on pancakes I might add.Actually quite tasty but not exactly a healthy, nutritious start to the day. Also muffins and pastries are quite poular for breakfast over the pond.

Everything in US is huge. It is practically impossible to get a small sandwich for lunch. Instead you are served a huge triple decker monstrosity with fries on the side. Also, what kind of nation feels the need to smother bacon in maple syrup, for heavens sake?Apologies to any americans out there

And if I am right, and echoing Soupy, the happy meals there are the size of our adult medium meals here!!!!

As and when I have taken my kiddies, they can't physically manage a whole happy meal each. I normally get one between two. I will admit tho that the main reason mine want to go is because of the toy, so I sometimes just buy them the toy on it's own. And yes, that is an admittance to being sucked in by the advertising

Watching the film I think that the american supersize portion are at least twice as big as our largest.....no surprise that he threw up really, I'd bet he did it because he simply couldn't physically eat that much. Any of us would throw up if we ate two lots of large in one sitting.

Yes, truly gross. I love a diet coke but if I drink more than about a pint of it in one day I start to feel quite yucky.

Report
SoupDragon · 29/04/2005 12:14

All the US portion sizes used to be huge compared to UK ones. Even the size of the Happy Meal drinks. Don't know if they've changed this.
