I wondered what he'd done that had gone against the original plans - it was never mentioned in the programme (that I heard) except a referance to him possibly lowering the building. I am a stickler - why don't people get and stick by the planning permission?!?

gosh... that IS near, isn't it? and high.

i take back everything i said about the neighbours, i'd be devastated.

Ooh great that we get to hear the neighbours' side of the story - I'm with them to be honest, planning permission is planning permission and you should get it before doing anything.

it's a bit weird though. I buy GD magazine, and there are 4 little ones plus bump, all named too.

No... hold on... it was on tonight and they only mentioned 2 kids at the start.

Report
georgiemum · 07/02/2009 19:14

Maybe he sold them to fund the build.

hi all! i was doing a google search for the grand designs program, and came across this forum. loads of info on here, great stuff!

Anyway, what I want to know is where did his other two kids disappear to??!!!!

in GD magazine, he said he had 4 kids with another on the way, on thge tv, they said he only had three!!!! it also showed in the mag, the cartoon drawing of him, his wife and there 4 kids along with her bump!

did he eat them?

We finally caught up with this weeks recorded GD, and I really liked him. It is a pity there arent more nutters with a will out there the world would be a much more convivial place.

The neighbours I think were a pain in the elbow, and as for the USELESS council who couldnt organise a apple bob in an orchard @?>:>:}}{!

Mind you wasnt keen on the tangoed look, and yes it was small but kinda nice not to watch everyone trying to live in football stadium size houses, welcome to normalsville.

Rock on GD!

Oh I love this thread, I watched it last night and ranted away all to myself, should have come on mumsnet and ranted in decent company.

Laughed at someone's description of it as looking as orange as Judith Chalmers

wow I'm intrigued how you've already seen it. Does the wife get pregnant?!
Also by the way they are repeating some really old GD's on more4 at the moment, quite a few DH and I haven't seen before, back when they were so much less self-aware of the show and it all felt a bit more real.

i've seen next week's one, mrsj. it's another visitors' centre i'm afraid. young welsh couple, a bit ritzy, you'll all comment on how much niceer the wife looks as a blonde.

Oh didn't know there was a new thread for the new episode. I wrote on the old thread: Last night's was really interesting, a very different and refreshing story- they were surprisingly honest, especially the wife. She did seem to be left in London with the children for most of the time but I admire how she stood by her husband's dream however misguided it was. As soon as they said that the build started in spring 2006, you knew you were in with an intriguing story.

TBH I can see what the neighbours had a problem with - it was a bit of an eyesore, especially the colour! We had a dispute over planning with a neighbour recently (us complaining about their building) and the whole thing does go on forever- I think we're nearly into 2 years and the thing is sitting there half-finished. The whole process is too drawn out.

I loved this episode though, more like this please Kevin rather than ones like last week!

Next week: New edition of the property series following householders as they build their own homes. Sarah and Dean Berry return to their native South Wales from London, attempting to restore a hilltop castle near Newport. (radio times blurb)

There are so many people around who start building on a wing and a prayer having been given the wink by the planning department. When will they learn to wait for the written consent fgs? And when will planning departments learn not to give verbal approvals without spelling out all the conditions? GRRRR.

me too, tinker. he was a grafter as well as a dreamer, and i admire that. he must drive her round the BEND though.

Aw, I'm surprised at the slating this bloke has had. Come on, after last weeks "passionate about design" wankers. I liked it, him and her.

The wife was hinting very strongly that the neighbours were scary, wasn't she? She was saying that she wouldn't feel able to be happy if she couldn't enjoy the surroundings as well as the house, ie go to the pub or the shops. I'm inferring from that that there has been a slightly scary slanging match or two.
