There is vast amounts of academic research being done, whether that’s how to get most efficient feed mix, farming entirely using robotics, working out how to manage black grass or research into tillage. It’s pretty patronising to think farmers don’t have degrees.

From experience, being a good tractor driver is only a very small part of the story, for farms to stay profitable and competitive they need to be innovating and thinking ahead. Farms that in today’s markets don’t make it.

I would say that most farming children go to college or university now.
My cousin aged 70 never went near a college. He's a successful dairy farmer with his parlour kitted out with the latest robotics. He's bright, forward thinking and entrepreneurial with a life's experience in .stocksmanship
Farmers are not homogeneous group. Many have degrees and many have not.

Wow - I wouldn't have even thought of watching this as I'm not a fan of Clarkson at all, but you've all convinced me!

I know a few Kalebs - bright, witty, driven, happy and successful but people look down on them for driving tractors rather than accumulating debt and a sense of superiority and entitlement from university.

Yes, that's definitely mostly what you get from university. Nobody should bother going. Those uppity people planning on being doctors, scientists, historians, engineers, teachers etc wanting to learn things - the sheer entitlement and arrogance of it!

I've been on both sides of the fence so to speak: I've been to University (three different courses) and worked as a teacher and a SALT. Now a farmer and am now surrounded by Kalebs both male and female. They are so much more straightforward. The woman who helps me with the sheep just tells it like it is. There's no dancing around on eggshells. I frequently hear DS and her having 'words' but it's always ok half an hour later. Farming is 50% bellowing. Shouting at sheep, making yourself heard over machinery, guiding people in with trailers and lorries. Other Kalebs are shearers, fencers, bailers farm supplies merchants. Of course we have the vets but they don't stand on ceremony either. Not when they're wading through shit just you and putting their hands into sheeps orifices.

I'm in awe of Kaleb - someone being that independent and competent at age 21 is just awesome. And I like the way he's perfectly prepared to call Clarkson a twat when he's being a twat; though I guess that may be why he was recruited in the first place.

@megletthesecond I’m a land agent like Charlie, it’s a great career that pays well and has a shortage. Every single person on my uni course had a £25k+ grad scheme job before we graduated. Once qualified you can easily earn £40k+ a few years after graduating. Highly recommend.

I thought that it was very good at getting across the real issues being faced by farmers in an easy to understood way.

Yes at times JC was his typical tv personality bombastic self but there were plenty of occasions in which it was very real and you could tell that he really cares.

I'm quite enjoying the series, but there are some bits that are too reminiscent of Top Gear stunts that just don't ring true - e.g. when Clarkson ignores advice on digging the fields up and down, or uses the stupid drone to round up sheep. And pretending to be ignorant by talking about things like "sheeps" just doesn't work.

I loved it! Only got one episode left I’m gutted! I’m a JC fan anyway but really liked his girlfriend too, she knows how to put him in his place. I think Caleb and Gerald are father and son, noticed on the credits they have the same last name.

They aren't. Caleb confirmed it on Instagram. No relation at all.

We loved it. As others have said it gives a far better insight into farming than Countryfile or anything else on TV.
Let's hope everyone who watched and loved it starts to look after our farmers buying British!!

He clearly found all the regulation etc very frustrating and would have liked to bypass them, but he didn't, did he. Charlie wouldn't have stood for that nonsense.
I enjoyed it, much more than I has expected, and found him more likeable too, although 'I did a thing!' got quickly tiresome.
It was an eye-opener to me too about some of the harsh realities of farming and how very precarious a living it is. Most are going to be stuffed when the subsidies stop.

It's in the news this morning that Amazon have decided not to commission another series.

JC is encouraging people to write to Amazon and complain

I'm getting a whiff of a publicity stunt, but equally it's not showing up without having to search for it so Amazon don't seem to pushing publicity for it like they were originally.

Where have you seen that? On Twitter someone asks Jeremy about it:
