'Conversely, I don't think we've had as many Ted-isms this series. And they're Ted-isms, BECAUSE Ted says them. '

There not Ted-isms to me, he's just throwing in common colloqualisms that Norn Irish people use all the time!

I was very pleased to hear "banjaxed" used in an earlier episode

I think someone was also referred to as a "wee bollix" which is not quite the same as having small bollocks

I think that story line is dead and buried now. Steve may have to say Steph was given the money, but that'll be it at most.

I'm wondering if some stuff like the 50k is just filler because of covid?

The 50k will come back to bite Ted on the arse. He'll redeem himself and they'll be about to call off his forced retirement, and then it'll come to light (I don't know how; don't have the brainpower right now to figure that out!)

diddl · 20/04/2021 16:31

Maybe it's to show that none of them is entirely above reproach?

People can be on the phone/distancing?

Oh, that doesn't work for Steve & Steph though!

Okay I stand corrected on the 'fight/flight' overcoming of pain.

I am sure definitely is a word that I always had problems spelling correctly as a child.

I can vouch for that: I use a wheelchair, but I ran when DS fell top to bottom down the stairs!!

On the subject of Steve's long-term back pain and OTC meds addiction/dependence, I noted that he ran very speedily in the last episode - and no sign of pain indicated? It seemed entirely unlikely given the massive effort he had to put into overcoming the pain in the van on its side shoot-out in episode 4.

It's possible to temporarily override the pain when adrenalin kicks in. That was definitely a fight or flight response

I've said it before, but Steve no longer has a back problem. He does have a painkiller addiction problem though.

Given the Jed Mercurio is a doctor by background, I don't think he'd be using dramatic licence with the Occupational Health emails would he? The thing is that Steve isn't even opening them so he is working on the 'positve drugs test angle' (guilt) but it could be something else?

He's taking a codeine stand-in and a naproxen stand-in, iirc.

Yes, I recall seeing Steve buying and guzzling ulcer-inducing shitloads of ibuprofen, so these will maybe show up as high levels, but not as illicit drugs - just far too much ibuprofen that needs explanation.

There was another medication as well beginning with P. Not paracetamol, but maybe something similar that can be taken with ibuprofen?

@IntermittentParps

I don't get the drugs test thing. Why is he getting messages from Occ Health about coming in for a test? I thought the point of them turning up in the office was that they took random people away for a test then and there. Why else would they have turned up and called Steve's name?

I think the messages from Occ Health could be unrelated to the drugs test team.
The OH messages could be a follow-up from his time off after the stairwell accident when he was in the wheelchair, which led to him scoffing the painkillers.
Obvs someone in the know / police might actually know the answer to this.

Ah, I see, so he HAS had his random test and now they're trying to follow up.

I've been wondering what on earth happens next and I'm assuming Ryan is a goner - his character had gone as far as it could and there are potentially two surviving serving police officers who heard him say he murdered Maneet and Corbett plus Kate thinks he drowned Lisa and said so in front of Jo.

I'm thinking that once she is told about Ryan's past and what's been going on, Carmichael is going to realise her strings were being pulled and she'll come good assisting AC-12 to draw things to a conclusion. This might not be something we realise/are told though. I have a feeling she knows something that brings everything together.

Iirc when I was drugs testing in work, optiates is just a positive or negative; so Why Steve doesn't just invent a toothache (as he "doesnt want the, knowing about his back") that he's taken zapain for, fuck knows.

Report
peachgreen · 20/04/2021 14:00

I guess with the drugs it's not like they found heroin in his system - just higher levels of over the counter painkillers than they might expect. Possibly prescription-strength levels. And it's for something they don't know about. So it's raised concerns but it's not like he's broken the law or anything - so they want to talk to him to find out what's going on. Obviously in his case it's that he has addiction issues but equally possible would be, say, a short term prescription for a recent injury, which wouldn't be a problem (other than the fact that he should have disclosed it).

There is of course the potential that Steve will somehow get out of his drugs test with the knowledge of the £50k. But then he did also tell Katemate.

the missing £50k just seems like a poor side story? It’s been given plenty of screen time but I can’t imagine Steve or Kate exposing Ted as it would spell the end of him.

It does seem like it just literally won’t be mentioned again on camera. Anti climatic.

I’m guessing it may be used against them in future seasons.

I wish some-one would crack on with shooting Steve, him and his wincing and his beard and his waistcoats do my head in...

I think he's brilliant. He doing the glazed over drugged up eyes to perfection.
