I have just watched these programmes and now feel thoroughly annoyed, but I don't know what to do about it. I've always voted, believing it was the right thing to do and women fought for it etc, but I'm giving serious consideration to not voting this year out of principle. I can not support any party that not only allows this to go on but encourages it.

This thread made me seek the programme out so thanks, OP. You often hear about us 99%ers but this programme explains it very well. It is sad that most people don't seem to have watched it but are happy watching stuff on benefit claimants or immigration. I'll have to ask around at work but no one's even mentioned it.

Interesting about Thatcher's possible plan behind selling off council housing.

What bothers me, though, is the government's insistence that people are generally better off and wages are going up by more than inflation across the board. But they're refusing a 1% rise to NHS staff so there are over 1m people whose wages clearly aren't keeping pace. I imagine that, given the incomes of the richest in society have increased so much, when it's averaged out across the rest of the population it's still enough to bump it up a bit. Like Gideon's mate who got a rise of over 19%.

Absolutely. And we have some of the best galleries, theatres, restaurants, and sporting facilities in the world, and our airports are "hubs", which means travel is easy.

I read an article in the business pages, probably 4/5 yes ago, explaining that the super rich aren't likely to go anywhere. We are a safe, stable country and even our time zone is a big plus point.

What I found interesting, in the first programme was that in countries where taxation for the richer people in society remained high, such as Scandinavian countries, growth was just as high as it is here, and other low taxing countries.

We always hear that if we tax the rich too much, they will leave. But where will they go? The top rate of taxation in Jamaica is, apparently, 5%. Why aren't the super rich rushing there? Perhaps these decisions are not only based on the lowest rates of tax!

Apparently that was Thatcher's reason for RTB - Part of her master plan to crush the unions, if the workforce had mortgages to pay - they couldn't go on strike!

i'm furious about what's going on between the sheets of the government and the super rich too. why do they think that it's ok to use the everyday hard working and honest person as a footstool to the table of the fat cats? Did you guys hear some of those execs revealing that they were earning millions in bonuses back in the 90's??! Then on the other side of Canary Warf there are parents fighting over how the last £10 was spent and children walking to school with holes in their shoes.

Furthermore one analyst said that if people have mortgages then they can't go out on strike- true. But then renting gives equally no long term security.

Some politicians were talking about inequality on QuestionTime on the radio. They were all saying that inequality doesn't matter, only poverty matters. Basically, as long as everyone has basic food and shelter, so not completely destitute, all is well in this country and there is no cause for complaint.
