Attention anyone pregnant or a parent: Michel Odent 40 Minutes Birth Re-born to be shown on BBC4

...not that i want to pinch RTKanga's crown, but I thought that you all might want to know that the most amazing documentary on childbirth will be repeated (first shown in 1982) on BBC4 at 9pm on the 12th October.

It's all about Dr Michel Odent, the French natural birth chappie and will make wonderfully comforting and informative viewing (I think) for anyone about to give birth or who has ever given birth. Also to any NCT teachers out there... set your videos. There is an AMAZING scene of a breech baby coming out one foot at a time and some darling twins.

i know i should tell you nearer the time, but i'll forget, sorry.

And for the style shop ladies, believe me, those 80s pregnancy smocks are worth a look.

Pruni - when you have pethidine and/or an epidural your body stops making endorphins (which you make in labour and need to labour)- endorphins are the natural pain relief hormones and the feel good hormones. So to me it could make sense.
I am not saying this is correct I am just explaining the role of hormones.

Have you ever read Does medication administered to a woman in labour affect the unborn child?

Fab! Will set the sky+ for next week. Love Michel Odent. I went on his training course.

lol@ furry fanjoleles

does anyone know how true the claim is that none of Odent's patients get PND? It is a woefully under-diagnosed condition after all.

i noticed that too, pruni, but i think that if you were watchign it in 1982 you would still be too dazzled by the sight of some french ladies furry fanjoleles to take it in. i imagine a lot of the commentary was revolutionary at the time but we are now so accustomed to aiming for the kind of birth odent facilitated that we are able to pick up on certain theories and question them. my mother remembers seeing it in 82 and crying her eyes out at how unlike any of her births it was.

But pupuce I struggle to see how say pethidine or epidural during labour could alter your hormones, and then cause pnd.
That's the gist of what he very offhandedly said as if it were accepted. (The commentator, not Michel odent.)

Pruni... I would not have a problem believeing that PND could be linked to drugs... and hormonal inbalance. I have met dozen, I'd venture probably to say over a hundred women who have suffered PND and several were helped with HRT actually, many were NOT helped by AD... I am not suggesting he is right but I would not dismiss it so quickly with so many women....

amazing programme. It's incredible how many of their practices are what women hope for today (ok, maybe not the singalong round the piano...).

can't imagine travelling 150 miles to hospital while in labour though

I didn't get what happened with the second twin - how come the placenta was in her way after the first twin had been born?

coince du cul

Mind you it must be weird meeting the (rather odd?) bloke who facilitated your birth, and having the camera poked up your nose at the same time

I thought she was quite affected watching the video of her birth..and she did say she would like a home birth. But she looked quite 'buttoned down'.

No she wasn't, the twins were Marie-Laure and Emmanuelle.
Amelie didn't seem that engaged by Odent, did she? Or maybe it was a cultural thing.

I loved it - saw a lot of it. i was struck by how quiet and still the midwives were, but i thoughht that was spot on - just being there, ready to react but not pro-actively 'meddling'. I would have liked my mws to be still and quite and not talk amongst themselves or to dp or my bf birth partner. so much 'help' is really 'fuss', ime.

I was running in and out a bit - was Amelie one of the twins? If so i thought it was a bit much just to focus on her and not the one who had to be born by CS.

Aaaah, those babies.

at hospital "law"
I missed most of the prog thuogh as dh was watching Extras.
There was some dodgy stuff going on witht he commentary, eg that pnd was caused by drugs in the woman's system messing with her hormones...hmmmmm

i thought that the midwives looked a bit stern too, but the women all said they were terrific. wasn't it interesting the way they first gave her the baby to latch on, in bed and lying down? in scotland there is a government directive that says you shouldn't bf in bed in case you squash the baby, so the midwives won't let you bf lying down...

I was quite surprised by a few things - the lighting looked pretty harsh to me for one, and the midwives sort of lined up against the wall, arms crossed, looking bored (though later the couple said they were lovely). And the woman who gave birth in the pool, on her back, looked and sounded like hard work!

Oh bum, have only just seen this thread. Would have loved to have watched it - the repeat times are ridiculous! I'll never manage to stay awake that late. Does anyone know anyone who can record to DVD?? My video player died a few weeks ago - I don't think they sell them anymore !
