it's a good one tonight, the best yet i reckon. loads of guest stars, really funny and they go to the baftas. next week's Ian McKellen isn't so good unfortunately, but then i didn't like the David Bowie one, thought it went OTT so what do i know?

THURSDAY 28 SEPTEMBER

Comedy

Extras

9:00pm - 9:30pm

BBC2 London & South East

VIDEO Plus+: 6190
Subtitles, audio description, widescreen

Written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant

3/6

The guest stars playing grotesque versions of themselves are always priceless Extras jewels. But for my money, the best bits involve the excruciating interchanges between Andy Millman (Ricky Gervais) and his idiotic agent Darren Lamb (co-writer Stephen Merchant). Lamb is a total buffoon: when he's not persevering in his doomed quest to revive the career of Barry from EastEnders (a very game Shaun Williamson, who plays along with this remorseless weekly humiliation), he's inadvertently firing torpedoes at Millman's fledgling career as an actor. Now that Andy's finally had a modicum of success with his awful sitcom When the Whistle Blows, he's in demand and is offered a part in a new film with Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe. Unfortunately for Andy, the negotiations fall to Darren, who's quick to spot an opportunity. Guest star Radcliffe is sweetly funny playing a version of himself as a horny teenager who hits on women with stunningly inappropriate chat-up lines. But the real meat of the episode lies in Andy's problems when he gets on the wrong side of both an angry dwarf and the mother of a Down's syndrome child. As you'd expect, it's staggeringly, joyously politically incorrect.

It's the mix of comic/tragic that makes it so brilliant though (imo). David Bowie's song was truly hilarious ... I was crying!

I am a big fan of RG, but I found that last night's episode tipped over into the mega-cringeworthy that I can hardly bear to watch. I found that with the second series of the Office too. It's almost too much.

Loved the David Bowie song! But the part when andy goes back into the other pub with the saddos (weird guy humping a table or something!) was tragic!

Am I alone in thinking that last night's episode was one of the most brilliant things I have ever seen on TV?

David Bowie!

Barry-from-Eastenders!

I thought Orlando was hilarious as well - and Barry

re turning down Orlando for a snog - wouldn't it be more cool to say you had turned him down than to say you'd snogged him?

I wouldn't with Orlando, tbh. He looks a bit, fragile. And I'm too old... (He has gone up massively in my estimation though - 'Willy Wonka - Johnny W*nker'...)

Oh! I missed it. I thought the last serious was hilarious. Didn't think I would as I just didn't get The Office.

I loved the last series too - all those "Big" names taking the piss out of them selves - thought the blessed Kate W. was hysterical banging on about you need to be "differently abled" in order to get an Oscar !!

Barry and the Shakespeare ....

I don't tend to laugh out loud so much as shriek with embarrassment. I found the end really sad. Brilliant idea to have RG's character mirroring what could have happened with The Office in real life.

Am I alone in not actually finding it that funny?
Amusing, yes, but not laugh outloud.
