What I loved about the play was how crap it was and how proud the parents in the audience were anyway :) Quite true to life!

After last week's dire episode, I thought this one was lovely too. I think it was more reflective of family life than other episodes too. I found some of the behaviour in previous episodes quite appalling but this one had some warm and fuzzy bits and showed that families can support each other and show each other a bit of love. I particularly enjoyed the play.

and thinks there's hope for a hamster that's been under the floorboards for 2 months either

Well, she was right about the hamster and everyone else was wrong... :)

I loved how it ended with Spartacus the musical.

Grin at all the nitpicking on this thread. of course lots of it wouldn't happen in real life, have you watched bbc sitcoms before? Wink

ds(12) loves this series and it thought it was funnier than the earlier ones. had to switch over for the spartacus bit, it made me wince!

'm not sure why her parents think she is clever if she's doing poorly in her tests and thinks there's hope for a hamster that's been under the floorboards for 2 months either

We had a hamster that was missing for a few months and when it finally turned up it was huge. She had the naivety of an 11 year old, doesnt mean that she icant be that bright

I have not liked this series at all - I think on balance it was a mistake. With the kids grown up it wasn't nearly so funny, especially Karen who was an absolute hoot as a small girl, but somehow stilted in this series. I know that's her part, to be a slightly gloomy pre teen but she didn't seem comfortable with her part. The boys were ok but I got so tired of seeing dad with his confused expression and that business with Sue at work was ridiculous. I think good script writers/actors know when to stop a series and it's a pity I think that they did this series.

However lots of people liked it ...................................

I really enjoyed it this week, I like it much better when the incompetent adults thing isn't the main thrust of the story and Aunty Angela is brilliant. So glad it went out on a high note.

Aw, got a little bit emotional knowing that was the last one ever. Glad AA came back for a visit. Think they went out on a bit of a schmaltzy high but why not?!

Sat with 13y ds and watched the final episode. It's been great watching this series together.
Ds has loved watching Ben, as well as the ongoing saga with the missing hamster.

I also feel quite sad that it's come to an end, probably because it reminded me how fast ds is growing up and becoming so independent.

Excellent programme. Wish there was more of that sort of comedy around.

I really enjoyed tonight's episode more than any bit sad its no more will be shown.

I watched the very first episode on Gold last night. Karen and Ben were so small, makes you realise how fast kids grow up!

Last episode was the funniest of this series with lost Oyster cards and keys

I don't have children let alone teenagers but work with them and they are like this :)

But series is ready to finish do hope next weeks last ever episode will be good :)

Just found this thread, I'm watching on catch up.
I suspect those of us with teenagers will appreciate this series more than those with little ones. The frantic efforts to maintain the lines of communication and hovering between protecting them and accepting that they are grown.
The UCAS thing made me laugh. He finally pressed the button at 1157

I think the point about Karen not being able to wait outside the house was that the nosey neighbour regularly reports them to Social Services - as Sue said, "It'd be Ben and the harpoon all over again"!

Not sure why she believes it's illegal to leave an 11 year old in the house alone. It isn't - is it????Blush

I particularly felt for Sue when she accidentally phoned Jane instead of Janet. Been there, done that......Blush Blush Blush

I'm not sure that the head teacher scene wouldn't have been like that. I can't see school governers being interested in an umpteen page list of trivial complaints by a first year pupil and suspect they would just ask the head to try and sort it out.
Karen is supposed to have no friends and does seem to think she's "special" although she is portrayed as fairly normal in this series which makes the plot line unrealistic. If she was really being superior and refusing to sit next to everyone she'd be more like the girl who came round for tea personality wise. I'm not sure why her parents think she is clever if she's doing poorly in her tests and thinks there's hope for a hamster that's been under the floorboards for 2 months either. It's all just silly. Ben seems to be the clever one, but he's cliche geeky clever.
They should bring back the god daughter, she brought out the best in them.

I thought the bit with Karen and the Head teacher was really stupid. It just wouldn't happen like that in real life.

I'm Blush to say at Karens age I did a similar thing, in that I wrote a petition and got people to sign it - mine was a complaint re bullying at school. (I was right by the way! But that's not the point! Wink ). I had a similar meeting with my head of year who used similar tactics, telling me how upset the head teacher was with my views and persuading me I was wrong and to put it in the bin myself so that 'I wouldn't get in any more trouble'.

In hindsight I was a distressed kid crying out for help and the teacher was an unprofessional bitch who then bulled me for the remainder of my school career.

It's not how good teachers behave. It's not I imagine how many teachers behave in 2014. But Rebecca Front, the writers and directors are pulling on experience of schools older than mine ifyswim.
