"There is a significantly higher risk of stillbirth after 38 weeks if you have GD".

Actually the research into GD and stillbirth isn't at all conclusive, and complicated by the fact that some women with GD may have had undiagnosed incipient type 2 diabetes before pregnancy, need insulin and have poor control of blood sugars. Other women only have it in third trimester, have well controlled blood sugars with diet alone, and probably don't have any higher rate of stillbirth than the general population. Sadly the same protocols are applied to pretty much all women with GD.

Sorry sailors I'm a bit precious because both DCs were born there. But yes, they do have a pool. I was only because its a busy maternity unit in the 3rd biggest city in the country...

They may only have one - not sure - but they definitely don't have enough, though the baths in the home from home rooms are big enough to deliver in. I was offered the opportunity except the midwife couldn't be bothered to disinfect it so I couldn't

I think it's just the way it's been edited so far as they did show several water births in the last series.

It was like watching a replay of my own birth - induction (albeit after labour had started and stalled) - epidural - decelerations - forceps, although in my case that didn't work and it ended up in ECS. DH goes pale every time they show decelerations on OBEM - brings too much back.

I agree it was nice to see a forceps birth go so well.

I've never seen anyone look that happy about forceps, but then the mw was quite gentle and controlled.

still would have insisted on c/s if it was me though. no induction shite for me.

Thanks for clearing up the GD thing, a few friends have had inductions at 38 weeks for GD and they have said it was for big babies. Both had horrific inductions too

Yes, one of the midwives in the programme did mention the increased risk of stillbirth early on after the husband asked if they could wait a bit longer rather than being induced at 38 weeks. I am sure they would have been told that previously, so perhaps that question and answer was added for the benefit of viewers.

They don't deliver GD mum's babies earlier just because the baby is likely to be big. There is a significantly higher risk of stillbirth after 38 weeks if you have GD.

And does it only have one? Am always shocked they don't have more. Lots of my ladies want a waterbirth and are worried that the pool will be in use when they want to use it.

I just hadn't heared it mentioned at all or even a midwife suggesting it but I guess that probably is down to editing.

It's a major hospital in a major city. It was shown a few times in the last series. In fact I think they even devoted a bit of an episode to Myleene Klass popping in to open the new birthing pool.

Oh right missed that. Is it size that they recommend early induction for a GD mother then? In case the baby gets too big?

She had Gestational Diabetes.

Sweet kitty - she was induced due to mothers gestational diabetes, though she wasn't a big baby at all

Just means flat on your left side. Supposedly best position for the baby. Did stop my DS's decelerations but was agony for contractions.

Just thought that about th induction, that baby wasn't ready to be born yet (don't know why she was induced), just led to interventions.
