Where have you bought your children's winter coats this year? I need some ideas, it's getting very cold and a warm coat is a must for school.

I bought DS a Muddy Puddles ‘blizzard’ coat on sale, and am very pleased with it.

Pre-school I bought Zara Kids down-filled coats, great price and looked lovely but perhaps not the best for outdoor wet/messy play.

Mini rodini. Waterproof, warm and lovely!

I have submitted to two coats 🙄
Polarn waterproof one for all year round (we holiday in Ireland so essential!)
Then johnlewis navy padded school coat for cold days. It’s waterproof enough for showers, cheap enough if purchased a size too big to be thrown around and not too covetable

Trespass 3 in1 are fab.

I’ve found trespass can come up really cheap, and they do proper bum covering warm waterproof parkas

I've bought Helly Hansen ones for my lot this year.
Expensive but waterproof, warm and good enough quality that they'll get reworn next year then handed down.
Also ds2 who is a lifeboat obsessed coat refuser wears his without an argument because he knows that's what the lifeboat crews wear Grin

I just bought my daughter a hooded parka from Mountain Warehouse. Think it was about £26? In a lovely berry colour. There were lots of colour to choose from too and its really cosy apparently 😊

Lee Cooper coat from Sports Direct, it was £10. My DS is happy with it as it is warm and has a polyester fleece lining so it is soft inside.

I bought my DS a fab coat from Boden, brightly coloured so he is seen in the full weather.
It’s 2 part- he’s been wearing the showerproof/ fo sherman’s jacket type part for months, great, we love it.
As soon as they went back in October I tried to add the padded part of the same coat assuming it would zip in. Nope, 2 different jackets completely despite being sold as one.
It’s a complete PITA. They are gorgeous though, bright and cosy.

8 year old ds has a Gap parka, and the teens have technical parkas from The North Face.

I got my daughter a Boden waterproof parka. It's slightly padded and has plenty of space for layering underneath when it gets colder. But like most children she runs hot and hates feeling overbundled

I second Trespass. Really warm, waterproof and good deep, cosy pockets. DD likes hers so much I went and bought one for myself. So cosy it's like wearing a duvet with a hood.

Muddy puddles when they have a sale. Really good coats.

That said DD has a down parka from the Zara sale that is very warm

We got Higear 3-in-1 coats from Go outdoors last week. Properly waterproof with removable fleece inside. They will only wear these to school when the weather is properly bad though, as well as their outdoor Scouting activities and sports. Most of the time it a padded shower proof supermarket coat, which copes with the majority of English weather.

Trespass

My Ds never liked puffy or bulky coats , at school he'd never wear a jumper either . Hmm

He's nearly 20 now , at University . I got him a black, smart , zipped pocket (+ secret pocket) Trespass coat for if he needs waterproofing or if he needs to look a bit smart .

I have lived on the US East coast where the temperature drops to ridiculous levels. But it doesn’t rain.
So here is my UK coat advice for kids:

  1. Mountain Warehouse do a 3 in 1 which is fab. It’s waterproof and warm especially when warn over a sweater. It is almost always enough for the UK.

Jojo Maman Bebe do a similar one and they are also warm.
  1. If you want to buy a padded coat you should buy one with down or a down alternative. My boys wear Patagonia down coats which were about 99 dollars to 120 dollars in the US. But they often didn’t need a sweater under it in the UK they were so warm.
  2. Gap does down coats for boys as well and they are reasonably priced. Not the bog standard puffer ones though. Just look through what the inside filling is.
  3. Boden does a parka which is again quite warm and waterproof.
  4. In the US my son’s school recommended Lands End. They are durable well made and again have down coats with a waterproof exterior that is perfect. (And much less bulky than the Gap equivalent).

Hurrah! I’m an evangelist for them. My pair are always toasty warm and they are incredibly hard wearing (they have to be to survive two lots of nursery and forest school!)
