I've joined mumsnet especially after seeing link to this page on twitter! Never had a proper fitting bra - my underbust is 26 and bust 31, what size bra should I be wearing? Would love some help on this, never had courage to get measured anywhere, thankyou

Thank you for all the advice in this thread (haven't read it all!) Have been wearing 38C for years, but knew that recently I was bulging out of this, now in 34G (measured 35" under, 43" dangling)! Feels very supported, but a bit itchy for some reason, but this probably nothing to do with fit, also very slightly uncomfortable under armpits. Can't get over being a G, neither can DH who is astounded !

My newest bra came from Sainsbury's Tu range and is a 36F. None of my bras feel great tbh, apparently they are meant to feel like you have nothing on, but with the staff in M&S being terrible, the BHS one's refusing to help and no other shop in the centre I was left with Sainsbury's. I did go to House of Fraser a few months ago and saw a lovely lady who helped but if she isn't there there is no chance of any help with fitting.

I have put the sizes you suggested in my phone and when I have child free time I will try some on. My problem is I have asthma and can't cope with anything tight around my chest.

It's a very common mistake, honestly. You will feel a lot better once you get the size right. Pop one of your 34s on back to front and just see how far away from your body it will come. You'll probably be surprised

SC - since having the kids I have been mainly wearing 34 and 36 even though logically it sounds like I should be a 32. IIRC I've been in E, F and Gs.

If I wear a 40E as M&S insist I am then it is tight and digs in painfully. If I wear the 36K that Bravissimo put me in I don't find the band too tight.

Quite often, a bra can feel too small in the back if it is actually too small in the cup - hence asking about the cup. If there is insufficient cup space then the breasts kind of steal fabric from the back, making the back feel really tight. I can barely close my old 30GGs (I'm now a 30HH/J)

The best way to try is to get a 32, and put it in back to front. That isolates the back from the cups so you can just establish the back size. It should be firm, but not painfully tight.

I can't remember as it has been a while since I tried but I just know they were impossibly tight. The fitter wrote on the receipt she recommended 32 but I took a 34. I had just had a nightmare at R&P so was wary of taking a size I wasn't convinced was going to be okay if it felt tight in the shop.

Fairythunderthighs - start with a 36G, 36GG, 38G and 38FF. The 36s are more likely

OK I'm 37 ish under boobs, and 48 over. I bent over and dangled the boobs for the over measurement, is that right? Currently wearing a 40f from Marks which gapes under the boobs and generally doesn't feel comfy. Help please!

I can't get 32 on, they are really tight .
I know this sounds stupid given I have posted my size but I feel I am bigger around the back and have very full breasts.
Pre kids (3 babies, 3 lots of breast feeding) I was a 32DD. Not sure pre-kids size is ever relevant though. I am also currently 1-2 stone heavier than I was before dc1.

I would start with a 32GG, also try 32H, 30H, 30HH

Ah ha - The gorgeous range are notorious for running small in the back. I am a constant 30 but have to but a 32 in them.

Try looking at brastop, leia (outlet section), mycurvesandme and amazon. Brand like panache, curvy kate, freya, fantasie, fauve etc are all good and can be got for the price of cheaper ones.

Statistically, they were Debenhams own brand (cost is a bit of an issue with me, budget very small!). I suspect you will tell me a better brand will have a better fit. Better get saving!

Yes, it is roughly equal to a 34L (maybe even an LL, bit of debate about sister sizing!)

Am I right in thinking that a KK in a 36 is a bigger cup than a KK in a 34?

melezka you will be amazed at the difference. The other poster I mentioned was actually having constant pain and whilst her current bras aren't perfect they are a shitload better and she's had a massive alleviation of symptoms.

To take them in you can either just sew a small pleat (works well done at the sides) or take the fastening off and remove a small amount from each end of the band, then reattach. At most you could maybe go down two backs (maybe combining the methods so the straps still end up in roughly the same back position) but any more would distort the bra too much.

lurcherlover I'm not an expert (hopefully marriednotdead will appear as she may have come across this before) but I would imagine that measuring our way would get you far far closer to a comfortable size. You might need to tweak a bit but I suspect it will be better.

And there is never a clear delineation between them - the middle does not lie flat.

But I'm not really sure how to answer how do they feel. I'm not sure any bra is going to fully alleviate the discomfort.

Hmm ok so probably up at least 2 cups then, maybe more.

here is everything bravissimo have in a K cup and above. If you turn out to need a 34KK (for example) then you might want to give serious thought to trying the 36ks, getting the cups right and taking the back in. The selection narrows massively when you only look for KK, and to 1 bra for L. It's very easy to take the back of a bra in by a single size though.

I have tried different bras and always seem to come back to this one as it is comfy for me once the back gives a little bit. I guess I've been deluding myself with the fact that the muffin is just smaller in these than in others :-(
