Hi all,

My son has his follow-up appointment with the neuro-disability team next week and we have just received the report from his teacher for the consultant.

It says that 'He was assessed in September on the BPVS and did not score.'
I have tried googling but can't find a lot. Does anyone know if he didn't score because no issues were found or he didn't score because he failed?

He is in reception, he is unable to recognise letters and the phonic for it.
The teacher has said 'He finds phonics difficult and is working below Age Related Expectations' and that he is taking part in 'Talk Boost intervention'.

We haven't been told much about support, at the last parents' evening we expressed our concern about his reading/phonics we were told just to keep practising at home but I'm concerned that if he failed the BPVS then we may not be helping him the right way.

Any input would be extremely helpful, thank you!

I would take ‘didn’t score’ to mean DS wasn’t able to answer anything rather than no issues found because a child without any difficulties would be able to answer.

The BPVS tests his understanding of language. The teacher would put 4 pictures out and ask your child to point to the “bed” or “banana” etc. There is no reading or phonics involved.

For “Did not score” I would agree with the PP that it means DS didn’t answer any/ not enough to register a score

BPVS checks his understanding of language - it’s a test of receptive language. Whether he understands words being said.

School ought to have advised that they were intending to carry out the assessment.

I would request a meeting/telephone discussion to discuss the findings with the SENDCo and/or the assessor who carried out the test as well as a plan of action, so like you say, so you can support at home too.

Hope you get some answers!

It's a vocabulary test, the assessor says a word and the child points to one of 4 possible pictures that represents that word. I'd say did not score probably means he wasn't accurate in any, I can't remember the cut off but most assessments like this have a discontinue after X wrong answers so he may not have been asked to do that many.

And yes it's receptive vocabulary. Sorry sent my post too soon. It stands for British Picture Vocabulary Scale
